I am missing 20Gb on two 400GB drives - any ideas?

Disk Total Used Free Usage
Disk-6 366.8G 344.2G 3.9G 99%
Disk-7 366.8G 326.8G 21.4G 94%

It seems to me that they are both 20GB shy

Any suggestions on getting them back?

Not sure how that applies Georg?

Maybe you meant to reference something else.

NL is reporting 366.8 Total 344.2 used and 3.9 Free

This is not when is a gigabyte not a gigabyte issue

Sorry :oops: ... in haste I failed to do some subtraction on your numbers. I checked my own disks, and the (Total-Used) does indeed equal (Free) (+/- 0.1GB).

Next thought is (although it's strange that both are missing a nearly identical 18.7/18.6GB): Some "corrupted" files on both disks ? (A Linux guru might have some feedback on this ?) Have you forced a file system check (via the "Storage Configuration" menu) to try to correct this ?

Another question: Is there a hidden partition ? Possible reason: the disks were not completely "wiped" when initially installed (transfers from other PCs (?Dell) that created those partitions) ?

Does your syslog show partitioning on these two disks ( a mention other than "p1" in the "user.info kernel: Partition check:" section ) ?

:) Georg

If the count is off on those drives only, then i'd suspect the drives. That is a new one on me tho. :?

georg: np :lol:

I haven't seen this before, one is a Samsung the other is a Maxtor they were both previously in external USB cases.

I'll get a couple more 500GB drives, backup to those and then play with them.

They have my ripped movies on them, it has taken a year to do them. The third Movies drive is on an Ubuntu box.

I have just noticed another drive with 10Gb missing that was formatted in the NL box just last week.

I have to order the drives so it take me a week or so to get an answer back on this.

I have a suspicion it is something to do with journaling on Ubuntu.

Both those drives were formatted under Ubuntu as ext3. Looking at the other drives on the Ubuntu box, the missing gigs are proportional to the size of the hdd, some disks 9GB, other 11Gb etc etc.

I thought NL automatically turned journaling on for drives formatted by it. If so wouldn't we see similar behavior for all disks? Don't know. I need to do more research on Linux disk formats.

My drives are journaled (but it's NOT automatic -- it takes an extra step) and not missing any Gigs ... but Ubuntu might do it differently, or it may have partitioned the drives with a swap partition. Again, check your syslog under the "Partition Check:" section. (Do so BEFORE you reformat so that we have that info for diagnostic purposes.)

Here is the log for the two 400GB drives, any ideas? Did I get the right bit?

* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.warn kernel: hdg: attached ide-disk driver.
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.warn kernel: hdg: host protected area => 1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: hdg: 781422768 sectors (400088 MB) w/8192KiB Cache, CHS=48641/255/63, UDMA(100)
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.warn kernel: hdh: attached ide-disk driver.
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.warn kernel: hdh: host protected area => 1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: hdh: 781422768 sectors (400088 MB) w/16384KiB Cache, CHS=48641/255/63, UDMA(100)
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: Partition check:

I also got this :-

* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0: p1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: un0: p1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0: p1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0: p1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target1/lun0: p1
* Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host2/bus1/target0/lun0: p1

You got the right bit. The strange piece, though, is the "Oct 23 19:20:29 user.info kernel: un0: p1 " (partial) entry.

Ok ... I tried to duplicate the problem in a couple of ways, but was unable to do so. I don't have Ubuntu (and enough experience to work efficiently with it) ... I used Partition Magic to create more than one ext3 partition; on another test I converted one of them to swap space, then blank space ... etc. In all cases the syslog showed the appropriate number of partitions like so:
Oct 25 19:08:58 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0: [PTBL] [2491/255/63] p1 p2 or like so:
Oct 25 18:53:46 user.info kernel: /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 p2.

And in all cases, even if NASLite identified a relatively small partition as the only one available (i.e. much less than the total HDD space) the numbers (Total-Used) added up to (Free) (even after adding the journal and writing files to it).
As a final check I used NL (v2.04) to FORMAT the disk (which had Partition Magic partitions on it) and it correctly wiped out the extra partitions, formatted to the full size of the HDD, but also interestingly reported this:
Oct 25 19:31:46 user.info kernel: /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0: [PTBL] [2491/255/63] p1
(I would have expected it to simply say "/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0: p1")

Sorry ... can't help further. Let us know what happens after you reformat the disks.

:) Georg

georg

Thanks for trying.

I am about to order a couple of new 500GB HDDs but I it will take me a couple of weeks to get around to getting them in and the data moved around.

Will update then.

In the meantime I am trying to work out how to get Time Machine on my new Mac OS to use a NL AFP share :-)
