NASLite Network Attached Storage

I’d like to share the following few notes we received in email the last couple of weeks. It is always nice to stumble onto words of encouragement buried in the mountain of support requests. I also want to publicly thank everyone that took the time to offer feedback.

I echo those sentiments as I have only ever had one problem with the software itself (of my own making) and have received nothing but constructive and positive assistance both via e-mail and Live Support.

For a software package costing less than $30, which as a previous respondee stated "simply works" that's excellent, and more importantly, personal service.

Morning all, (in the UK anyway!)

I would like to say well done on some great products. I started using the NASLite Suite about 3 years ago at a school, it was mainly used with Veritas to provide backup to disk and it worked wonderfully well.

I have just purchased v2 for my home network, which install without a flaw, apart from the dead floppy disk drive (BTW has anyone tried it with USB floppy drive, as newer pcs dont have floppy drives anymore?)

I cannot wait to get a raid5 card and some more HDs

Some ideas for future releases: (I hope that v3 comes out in the next 179 days )

Extended update period - Maybe push the price up slightly and offer 1year maintenance / or purchase 1yr maintenance seperately, instead of the 180days

Secure FTP - requiring a logon, so the NAS box can be made public.

HTTP (with logon) - so the configuration can be done via the web browser as well as telnet

DNS Server - as most boxes are home users (a guess!)and the NAS box is normally on all the time, maybe include a basic DNS server so that people can connect via hostname instead of using NetBios. On a thought maybe a DHCP server as well for those with out internet/router providing a DHCP service.

I have been pounding the crap out of this thing for the past 1-2 years in a CAD office and it has never missed a beat. Every thing you add to this is just icing on the cake.

Very very good ideas. I really really hope Tony and Ralph can implement Secure FTP with DNS support. Most new NAS devices allow you to connect to them over the internet with some security, and NASLite is COMPLETLEY lacking any type of security. Would adding simple security enhancements really take away from the simplicity?

You could always offer 2 different versions if you still wanted to stick with a simple one, but offer a more advanced version with Secure FTP support, along with DNS or even DHCP capabilities. I love the way NASLite is set up, I just wish it had a few more NAS-like features.

However, it really is a great product. Keep it up guys!

I have installed one or more Naslite servers in about 60 or thereabout customer locations. I’ve had nothing but good response from people about it’s utility. Many small offices don’t have a server and use client sharing to access things on the LAN. That’s usually when I tell them about Naslite. My pitch is simple as I just offer to take one of their old PCs and put it on their network for people to openly share data, store cd or dvd isos for access by lan users or anything else that will save people from having to hunt things down or dig for a cd on a shelf and so fort. Usually, after it’s installed, people come up with all kinds of uses for it.

There is no other product out there that fits the bill as well as Naslite. Funny thing is that often it becomes a conversation piece and I get a call from a friend of a friend of my client with a request to install one in their office.

I have just recently purchased the Server Suite and the NASLite-2CDD versions and I must say that IMHO they are really very fine pieces of software engineering. Functional, easily configurable, robust and well documented, these pieces of software are a bargin at the price for which they are offered.
