First off, thanks to everyone that puts helpful info here. Based on all of the information, I was able to figure out the configuration that works for me (using the kicker disk with ACPI turned off).

However, I can't get past the next problem I am having- saving the configuration file.

The first time I try to save I get the error
"ERR-0C (FAIL)".
On subsequent attempts the error is "gzip: /etc/ServerElements/cfg/config.dat.gz: File exists
ERR-0C (FAIL)"

Since the second error implies there might be some required info there, I tried a reboot but nothing is saved.

I am using a MSI P965 NEO motherboard (brand new out of the box today). I have only one floppy drive which the BIOS assigns as A. I have swapped the drive and cable with one from another system that I used to make the kicker disk so I know both the cable and drive are good (the disk was booting just fine off my other setup but I was getting desperate to try anything to get this to work).

I have tried y and Y to save. I have tried with and without the license information. I have recreated the kicker disk numerous times. I have started the process completely from scratch multiple times, recreating the USB drive and trying different variations of not saving until I put in all of the information and saving as I go along.

Saving as I went along was working the first time I did this (with the initial drive and cable) until I saved the 3rd or 4th time. Then I started seeing the errors. Since then, nothing has worked even when I started all over with a newly formatted USB drive and brand new kicker disk.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think if you're using the USB version, with a kicker, the configuration is trying to be saved to the USB disk (not the kicker) ... though I could be wrong.

I know my system is fussy about what port my USB drive is plugged into (it won't save the config when it's in one particular one). Try putting the USB drive in another USB port if you can.

Oh. In the manual I saw the note about write protecting the floppy to protect the configuration files so I was assuming that is where it was going. I see now (that I have had some sleep :-) that statement applies to the CD version.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will play around with that tonight and maybe even try some different USB devices (I couldn't format the first one I tried and may have one or two more around).

SAS- thanks for the suggestion. I started all over and went back to a smaller USB drive I could not get to work last night. After systematically working through the USB ports, I was able to find the one it would boot off of, even without the kicker disk!

Now to deal with the network device not found error. Guess I have to give up the built in gig-E and use one of my old 10/100 cards :-/

No problem :D Glad it (sorta) worked out

You could always try buying a brand name gigabit card if you have the $. I'm guessing the onboard one isn't working because it requires some obscure (non-generic) drivers.

There also does not appear to be support for my south bridge controller yet (ICH8) either so I will buy a SATA card and use an old NIC for now unless I see a good deal. I have to check on the NIC chipset, but I suspect it is an issue of not being supported at the kernel level by Linux.

Next time, I will reserach parts. I thought I was going to build a box on the cheap becasue I was given some DDR2 and a Celeron LGA-775 processer. But the CPU can only use boards with the P965 chipset which all use ICH8 or ICH8R south bridge which is not on the harware compatibility list... I am so anxious to get this set up that this is like excruciating torture! Everytime I get past one point I discover something new! Luckily there is a decent computer place 20-ish miles from my house so I can get parts fairly easily.

It's always a good idea to check the Hardware Reference document - or better yet, take a copy with you when you go to the ship and at the very least, check the chipset of the particular item.

Couldn't agree with you more! :D

Luckily since the CPU and RAM were free to me I am still at a pretty cheap build cost with the mobo and adding cards. And since I was planning on doing a NAS (initially I was going to buy an external enclosure device before I came across NASLite and had a friend mock me for not building my own), I am still under what I budgeted. The geek in me just can't handle all the waiting to get it up and running! I am almost a week behind schedule now. I really need to live somewhere with a 24/7 brick and mortar parts store when I undertake soemthing like this. Or schedule a vacation from the office.
