I know this has been mentioned before, but I cannot find an answer. I have a shuttle sk43g with on-board NIC. To improve connection speed I have added a gig NIC. Naslite recognises both cards, but will always default to the built-in interface (Eth0). Unfortunately there is no way to disable the onboard LAN (either bios or jumper).
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can make naslite use my gig NIC in preference to the onboard LAN?

Thanks.

Is there a solution for this? I just upgraded from the free floppy-based NASLite to NASLite-2 USB, and as part of the upgrade I installed a Netgear GA311, hoping to improve my transfer speeds. But NASLite-2 only wants to configure the on-board 10/100 interface. It would be a pity to not be able to use the gigabit adapter.

wait for version 2.04, it will use the last nic it finds instead of the first like it does now.

FYI I brought my server down today since a new disk arrived (ob plug: 400GB Seagate PATA from frys.com for $110). Since it was down I did a little playing around with the BIOS, and mine has a "knob" for enabling/disabling the onboard LAN. I disabled, rebooted, and voila! NASLite is now using the GA311 gigabit adapter.

woo hoo!!

:D

(Of course, I had to get a new unlock code -- something that was not immediately obvious!)

Hi, now I have the same problem in return: 2.04 takes the last (onboard) NIC but at my box it should take the first (plugged). I asked Tony to add a menu to choose between eth0 or eth1. But until now 2.04 is stuck for me.

That is a strange problem to have. What is the significance of the second NIC?

Ah, in a PM Roland describes his setup as an add-in NIC rendering as eth0 and the onboard as eth1. I'm not sure I’ve seen that happen before. Usually the onboard hardware renders first.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, what kind of board is it Roland? Can you also include the BIOS version?

Hi,
the mobo is an asus tr-dls last bios the plugged NIC an 64bit Intel 1000 TX the onboard Intel 100. I`ve tried to change slots, give fixed IRQ`s, NO plug and pray...
All that works is 2.03!

I’ve no experience with that board so I took some time to download and read through the manual. Definitely an oddball board Roland. Very strange design for sure. There are BIOS options to disable some devices and jumpers to disable others. There are none to shut off the damn NIC though. :?

The dilemma is this: As a design rule we do not save hardware-specific data into the NASLite configuration. That is the reason you do not see any hardware-specific options in the administration menu. By design NASLite evaluates the hardware at boot and configures itself automatically. The auto-configuration rules are pretty robust and have evolved in complexity to what you see in 2.04. There are cases, such as the one you are experiencing, that will not conform to what we’ve considered to be the norm.

With that said, is there anyone else experiencing the same problem? If this is not an isolated case, then we may have to come up with a way to select the fastest NIC. I don’t know if it will be effective, but it is the only thing that comes to mind of at this time.

Hi,
I noticed this at installing (testing that board) with knoppix, ubuntu and suse linux: onboard>eth0 plugged>eth1. I can understand for benefits of others changing this in 2.04 but where is the problem to add a menuepoint in network - change - eth0 to eth1 - reboot???
This box does it`s job since 2.01 in a furious kind of data transmission.
:how to add a screenshot.jpg???
We had 5 computers attached with 1g Intels all, writing and copying from it. nas system load of 128% delivering all of them with no delay! This means: 20MB/s single at smb - we didn`t try ftp yet.
P.S.: Thanks for changing updates payments
And: never change a running system

I understand, and gave it some more thought since my last post. I missed the obvious and probably best solution for the issue at hand. An option of first or last will be most appropriate and will not store hardware-specific info in the config.

Ralph and I will take a look at this in the following days and if we can’t poke any holes in it, we’ll add it to the v2.05 queue.

Meanwhile v2.03 is probably your best bet.

Thanks to you guys,
I am glad to hear that you are pulling - and that`s the way to get things done!
I `m not in a hurry to get a better version on NAS - the old version still is satisfying!
Have a good night???

Tony,

I am having similar issue.

I am using NASLite-2 CDD v2.04

I had a NetGear GA311 NIC and all was working OK (24 write/39 read)
I wanted to squeak a little more speed out so I purchased a Intel Pro/1000 MT card and now it keep defaulting to the onboard NIC as Eth1

My Compaq allows for turning off the onboard NIC, but PCI keeps turning it back on. (Had same problem in XP, think it is the WOL feature keep NIC active)

In the SYSLOG I can see the PRO/1000 loads first then the onboard NIC, a PRO/100 loads 2nd. My guess is that is why the onboard is showing up as eth1

Any way to switch between Eth0 and Eth1 would be great.

Thanks
Carson
