Around half of the time when I start up my NASLite server all the whole network goes down, no internet or inter PC access, and the yellow “Collision” lights on my hub all flash together a little slower than the green data flash rate.

If I unplug the NASLite server patch lead everything goes back to normal. Plug in again and “collisions:( so I swapped patch leads…twice…. nope  …. and today tried another network card… nope  .

It’s a real pain to keep rebooting the server until it all seems to connect OK and then seems fine for a while.

Also on boot-up one of my drives will sometimes stay ‘Busy’ for ages.

Any suggestions please????

I'm kinda suprised noone has said this yet.... LOSE THE HUB and get a switch. they are cheap for a huge performance gain over a hub.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have no idea if it's a hub or a switch, I always get them muddled up  it's the cheaper dumb one anway. I've managed to borrow one from work and if it happens again I can try the other one.

If he has collision lights flashing on the hub when he boots up of the NASLite box, there is an underlying problem than needs to be located - installing a switch will at best conceal the problem.

For collisions to occur some sort of data traffic must be flowing - since unplugging the cable to the NASLite box stops the collisions the traffic must either originate or end with that box - since it occurs at boot, I think we can safely assume that he has not yet started to transfer data.

Why would he see collisions if he's not transferring data - one possibility is a faulty network card, a condition known as jabber, when the card transmits continuously - a second would be a duplex mismatch - and a third would be some sort of loopback.
