I'm a complete Noobie to NASLITE-2 CDD having only purchased and installed it last night. Having a NIC card, which had failed to get recognised by Freenas and Openfiler, get picked up right away was amazing (first impressions last!). I was amazed by just how easy everything was to set up. I had previously messed around with Linux Distros as fileservers which I had spent more time messing with samba shares than actually doing any proper work! And as for Windows (don't go there).

It was nice to be able to plug in an external USB 320g drive into an old motherboard and see NASLITE pick it up, format and mount it with only a few key presses. Wow! I shared the drives to several Windows pc' s using the default workgroup 'mshome' (as you lazily do) and picked them all up on each machine. So I am one pleased bunny! However, 2 minor issues I found (or 'opportunities for improvement', if you like) was that you can't pass large files between 2 rives in the same NAS unless you map each drive separately. As I suppose Windows thinks you are on the same disk (expecting just a file allocation table or Metadata/journal/lost+found to be updated instead of physical) and times out, certainly before you've got through a 4gb file. So trying to backup NAS to an external USB drive, I am forced to slow everything down by having to take files off the NAS, do a round-trip of my home network, through a PC and back to the NAS.

1) But it would be cool if you could pass files internally. I could then backup the NAS to USB external storage. ...or do I have to NAS mirror to another NAS? :-( not rich enough yet!

2) Also, some basic user authentification would be good. Just 1 user account would do.

3) Also (Dear Santa...), can I extend the number of drives beyond 4 using RAID? Instructions said 4 was the max, but I don't know if that's just some artificial restriction (free version) or a s/w restriction.

Sorry for the verbose post. However, I am quite impressed with this package. It made an old PC (and an old man) very happy! All I do is just leave in the CD and floppy in the drives, turn out the Attic lights and administer from elsewhere. Even the html screens look better than my web hosts!

Hi JB41,

You can perform a mirror on the local NAS drive to drive.

Scroll down to wpappas post!

:D S.M.A.R.T. support from RAID hardware. This would be nice - unless I overlooked something.
