How about some passmark benchmark on those systems?

Just recently upgraded my network to gigabit (Netgear GS105 + brand new CAT6 cables). Previous to my upgrade I was maxing out my 100Mbit network from the NASLite with constant 11MB/s transfers. The 3Com 3C905 in the NASLite box was replaced with an Intel PRO/1000 MT adapter and a Netgear GA311 was installed in the client machine. These are the numbers I'm getting after the upgrade:

Quote:
E:\dw\diskWriggler-1.0.1.win32\diskwrigg
ler -NTSC -C -t -n 1000 -o \\192.168.0.11\disk-0
Frame Resolution : 720 x 486
Bytes / Pixel : 2,00 (packed) (8 bit, 4:2:2 sampling)
Frame Size : 699,840 bytes
File Type : All frames in one container file (699,840,000 bytes).

Writing 1000 x 699840 byte frames into file \\192.168.0.11\disk-0/framestream.dat

200 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 39,88 FPS (26,61 MB/s)
191 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 38,08 FPS (25,42 MB/s)
178 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 35,49 FPS (23,69 MB/s)
134 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 26,72 FPS (17,83 MB/s)
138 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 27,51 FPS (18,36 MB/s)
141 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 28,20 FPS (18,82 MB/s)
18 frames in 0,63 secs ==> 28,80 FPS (19,22 MB/s)

Write Summary : 1000.00 frames in 30,70 secs
: 26,72(min) 32,57(avg) 39,88(max) FPS
: 17,83(min) 21,74(avg) 26,61(max) MB/s

Reading 1000 x 699840 byte frames from file \\192.168.0.11\disk-0/framestream.dat

23 frames in 5,25 secs ==> 4,38 FPS (2,92 MB/s)
38 frames in 5,03 secs ==> 7,55 FPS (5,04 MB/s)
59 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 11,76 FPS (7,85 MB/s)
101 frames in 5,08 secs ==> 19,89 FPS (13,27 MB/s)
103 frames in 5,06 secs ==> 20,35 FPS (13,58 MB/s)
102 frames in 5,09 secs ==> 20,02 FPS (13,36 MB/s)
102 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 20,40 FPS (13,62 MB/s)
101 frames in 5,06 secs ==> 19,95 FPS (13,32 MB/s)
102 frames in 5,06 secs ==> 20,15 FPS (13,45 MB/s)
89 frames in 5,03 secs ==> 17,69 FPS (11,81 MB/s)
100 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 19,94 FPS (13,31 MB/s)
80 frames in 3,98 secs ==> 20,08 FPS (13,40 MB/s)

Read Summary : 1000.00 frames in 59,69 secs
: 4,38(min) 16,75(avg) 20,40(max) FPS
: 2,92(min) 11,18(avg) 13,62(max) MB/s

I'm not exactly thrilled with the performance "boost", was I expecting too much? See my signature for specs on the NASLite machine.. any ideas of possible causes of this semi-dissapointing performance increase?

Use a crossover cable and retest.

There's alway's going to be latency in the network, if the numbers are still low with the crossover, then look into issues with the card, if the numbers going up, look at your cabling, switch etc.

Also, I would suggest using IOZone instead of Diskwriggler for more accurate raw throughput, not seeked.

Getting identical numbers using a crossover. The Intel card was brand new and not likely to be faulty and I've tried three differents gigabit nics the box as well as in the client with the same result. What card are you suggesting I should look into issues with? Downloaded IOZone + cygwin but didnt find it very friendly :D (got a suitable iozone command line ready?) It should however be noted that Im getting 22MB/s read/write using FTP but I'd like to identify the bottleneck in my system. The drives alone should be able to pump out at least twice these numbers, is the PCI bus the bottleneck here? I was under the impression the PCI throughput was 128MB/s in theory but having to share the LSI card as well as the gbnic might be causing it to hog down? Any help is greatly appriciated!

PS! Wouldn't it make sense to create a benchmark section in the forums with troubleshooting section etc? Performance is obviously one of the main reasons ppl invest in NASLite and any help to squeeze out some extra juice is very welcome! Putting up a sticky with benchmarking tips (tools/commands etc) also decreases the amount of questions regarding this topic and gives the users an easy way to compare benchmarks etc.

Are you in some way limited by throughput from the NIC > RAM > HDD? Can you try an IDE / SATA HDD attached to the motherboard for comparison?

I'll hook up an IDE drive and report back the results.

Okay installed an IDE drive today to benchmark, here is the result:

Quote:
165 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 33,00 FPS (22,02 MB/s)
96 frames in 5,02 secs ==> 19,14 FPS (12,77 MB/s)
142 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 28,40 FPS (18,95 MB/s)
114 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 22,80 FPS (15,22 MB/s)
168 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 33,60 FPS (22,43 MB/s)
137 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 27,40 FPS (18,29 MB/s)
130 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 26,00 FPS (17,35 MB/s)
48 frames in 2,98 secs ==> 16,08 FPS (10,73 MB/s)

Write Summary : 1000.00 frames in 38,00 secs
: 16,08(min) 26,32(avg) 33,60(max) FPS
: 10,73(min) 17,56(avg) 22,43(max) MB/s

101 frames in 5,06 secs ==> 19,95 FPS (13,32 MB/s)
107 frames in 5,03 secs ==> 21,27 FPS (14,19 MB/s)
105 frames in 5,06 secs ==> 20,74 FPS (13,84 MB/s)
105 frames in 5,09 secs ==> 20,61 FPS (13,76 MB/s)
80 frames in 5,09 secs ==> 15,71 FPS (10,48 MB/s)
105 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 21,00 FPS (14,02 MB/s)
102 frames in 5,00 secs ==> 20,40 FPS (13,62 MB/s)
107 frames in 5,06 secs ==> 21,14 FPS (14,11 MB/s)
108 frames in 5,05 secs ==> 21,40 FPS (14,28 MB/s)
80 frames in 3,75 secs ==> 21,33 FPS (14,24 MB/s)

Read Summary : 1000.00 frames in 49,20 secs
: 15,71(min) 20,32(avg) 21,40(max) FPS
: 10,48(min) 13,56(avg) 14,28(max) MB/s

Not sure what to make of this to be honest... It should be noted that the RAID-card was installed together with the IDE-drive for reasons related to me being lazy :D

I still think a benchmark section in the forums is a great idea. Helping ppl benchmarking the product = happier customer = more customers = more money :D

A lot of people stuggle with diskwriggler, typing in the commands etc.
I got these sorted out all is needed is a double click of the mouse.

if anyone wants them just ask.. i'll stick them on my site sometime later..

A section with links to utils, a short faq on how to bench, a troubleshooting section and a section to direct all the questions related to performance - doesnt it sound like a good idea? :)
