Hi:

I copied around 7GB worth of files to NASLite v2.03, and discovered that a couple of files showed differences (using "fc /b" in WinXP command shell) -- although file size matches. When I checked "SYSLOG" I found the following lines (see below) during startup (prior to mounting the filesystem). There are NO errors or warnings in the syslog after mounting of the filesystem.

What does "abnormal status" mean ? Would it have anything to do with the file differences ? Or is the abnormal status related to the unused SATA ports ? (Only one 2.5" 20GB drive is installed on IDE using 2.5"-to-3.5" converter.)

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
:) Georg

Any new hardware? Drives, cables, SATA card, etc.?

Thanks for speedy reply, Tony.

Basically everything is new, because I am in test mode on a new style of server setup, and checking for reliability (!) before committing and switching from old server.

Supermicro P4SCi in 1U chassis, 20GB older 2.5" IBM (before they sold to Hitachi) 4,200rpm Travelstar, 2.0GHz P4-M (400FSB) in 478 socket (to keep the heat and thus the fan noise down). No PCI cards, VGA is onboard, slim CD on IDE-0, and slim floppy, 512MB RAM. At the moment I'm running Prime95 (using a 3.5" harddisk but same IDE channel and cable) to again verify reliability of the overclocked hardware. Note that because a P4-M (Mobile) defaults to 12x multiplier I am 100% overclocked from 400FSB to 800FSB, but because it's a 2.0GHz CPU it's really only a 20% overlock from 2.0 to 2.4GHz. Have run this setup reliably under WinXP for a month. I'll let you know if it survives 12+ hours of Prime95 (previously I only tried for 30 minutes).

Back to one of my questions: based on the log is the "abnormal status" message SATA related or IDE related (note the port #s and the "ata1" and proximity to the "SATA") ? Do you need to see the whole log ?

Thanks,
:) Georg

Update: Prime95 ran overnight for 12:19 (hh:mm) with no errors or warnings. I'll keep this thread updated. Next is to try using the 3.5" current disk on NASLite, then switch back to 2.5".

Update: Bad cable, BAD ! :x

After additional extensive testing on the 3.5" Maxtor (and I can reliably overclock the 2.0GHz P4-M to 2.7GHz on this motherboard in WinXP running Prime95) ... I wanted to switch back to the 2.5" drive. While pulling the cable from the 3.5" the plastic retainer on the end of the IDE cable came loose ... partially separating the ribbon cable from the connector. It may have been cracked and/or loose for a while without my noticing ... SORRY

Now back to the original question: I went into BIOS and turned off just about everything, including the (so far) unused SATA. The "abnomal status" message is now gone. So ... I have answered my own question. And this might help someone else. (The bad file compare was likely due to the cable going "broke", and the "abnormal" had nothing to do with the 2.5" IDE drive/cable combination.)

I am continuing to test ... this will become my second NASLite server, and I am planning on using the MIRROR function to back up the first NASLite. Just about ready to buy my next license ... but first I want to figure out how to dual boot the 2.5" ... (NASLite & WinXP)

:) Georg
