Hi,

I just finished building my NASLite-2 USB server, everything is running fine, I really love it. Couple of questions though (I'm a networking noob):

    - copying large files from my Windows XP box to the NAS (100mbit) gives me ~9 MB/sec, copying files from one NAS drive to another gives me ~5MB read / ~5 MB write. Are these numbers ok ?

    - when this copying is going on, the network path between PC and NAS is pretty much 'saturated', right ? So I would run into problems sending or receiving large data over the same path (e.g. streaming/recording video ) at the same time, is this correct ? If so, would an upgrade to a gigabyte infrastructure alleviate the problem ?

    - one of my drives (Seagate SATA) is making a creaking noise (doesn't sound that healthy to me, head movement?) exactly every minute, I assume it's caused by SMART checks since it goes away when I disable SMART in the server. Can these checks affect the lifespan of the disk in any way ?

    - where in the status pages do I see if a SMART check (after booting up) is still running ?

    - I currently have a 512MB stick ('borrowed' from another machine) in the server, and intend to replace it with 256MB I ordered recently. I noticed that the server is actually using the whole 512MB after a while, I assume for buffering. Will the difference between 256MB and 512M (and in general any larger amount of memory) affect performance, and if so how much ?

    - does only the admin console offer the option to sample the network traffic, or is there a place in the HTML status pages I missed ?

Thanks a lot for any answers,

Dirk

9MB/s is about right for a 100Mbit LAN.

For copying files from one NAS drive to another you can use the "Shares" network share and move/copy files within that file structure which does not use the network. The files are copied/moved locally.

Awesome, thanks a lot ALucas for this info. I was wondering if there was a way to do this (must have missed it in the manual).

Anyone else able to answer some of my other questions ?

Thanks,
Dirk
