What specific LSI or 3ware cards are you using. I am looking for a 4-6 port SATA card that can handle RAID 5.

Would it be possible install 2-3 or of these cards in one machine, so that I would only see 2 or 3 drives, once mapped?

for 3ware any excpet for models starting with the number 9.

Yes you can install several RAID cards.

I cant comment on LSI

I'm using an LSI Megaraid SATA 150-4, working flawlessly.
