I just wanted to post a note on what I built using the NASlite-2 to give those thinking about building a NAS some perspective. All of the items were purchased on Ebay with the exception of the ICY DOCK SATA drive cage.

The overall system is a 1TB NAS running Raid-5.

(1) p4 1.5Ghz motherboard w/ 256MB Ram - $66
(5) 250GB SATA drives - $53 each / $265
(1) 6CH SATA Raid card (Adaptec 2610SA) - $125
(1) ICY DOCK 5-bay drive cage - $129

Total: $585

How is the performance as far as file transfers to and from?

The performance is good compared to what I need it to do. Using diskwriggler, I'm getting 9.67 MB/s using a 100MB link. I suspect this would go faster if my motherboard I purchased would have had PCI-X -- the raid 5 card I purchase is a PCI-X card, but it is backwards compatible with normal PCI.

I used to use a LInksys EFG-80 NAS, and I just tested diskwriggler with it and was getting only 6.27 MB/s.

Overall, I'm VERY pleased.

I think you're just a wee bit confused - if you purchased a PCI-E RAID card, it would not work with a motherboard that did not support PCI-E.

PCI-X is generally backward compatible with PCI

PCI-E or PCI Express is a completely different serial technology which uses different, incompatible connectors.

You are correct - it is a PCI-Express card. It's the Dell CERC Sata 6 channel (i.e. Adaptec 2610SA). I'll edit my original post.

You're doing it again - you're confusing PCI-Express also known as PCI-E & PCIe with PCI-X.

The Dell CERC SATA 6 card is a PCI-X card not PCI-Express.

I am unable to get NASLite - USB to see the array on my 2610SA. Setup of the card during boot looks good and it shows optimal for the array. However the array cannot be seen to format it. I am also running a 3ware 7500-4 with no problems there. Did you do anything extra to get your 2610SA working?
