Hi

I am using a NASlite+ file server on my Windows XP network and last night while it was moving video files to the server the drive failed.

Here is some screen copied information after I rebooted the server:

I do not want to configure the drive again until I know if there is any way of possibly getting data off the drive. I am not very Linux smart and hope someone on this forum can make some suggestions on possibly reading files of this drive.

Dan,


Telnet to the nas and then go to Storage Config menu. then your HD, the choose the option to check and repair the filesytem.

THANKS for the fast response to my question.

When I do what you suggest I get the following screen:

CONFIGURE STORAGE DISKS

In order to create file storage space and make it available on the network,
NASLite must have a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 4 fixed disk drives
installed and properly configured. Disk numbers are assigned as follows:

1 - Primary (Master) on IDE-0 2 - Secondary (Slave) on IDE-0
3 - Primary (Master) on IDE-1 4 - Secondary (Slave) on IDE-1

WARNING: CONFIGURATION WILL DELETE ALL PRESENT CONTENT ON THE FIXED DISK!

By providing the optional C parameter, the fixed disk drive will be checked
for bad blocks. This is very time consuming but generally a good idea.

Example: > 1 C

If I then pick the drive (2 in my case) and add the "C" function the next screen shows this:

I would like to save the data if possible but the warning message says that all data will be lost. How do I just have the software do a check and repair the filesytem without deleting all of it?

I also checked the manual and found this:

On rare ocasions, NASLite+ will not be able to automatically repair a damaged filesystem. If this occurs, use the Configure Storage Disks submenu (Option 4). It provides the Check Storage Disk (Option C), necessary for manual filesystem check and repair. Checking each fixed disk drive filesystem may take a few minutes, depending on the disk capacity.

No mention here if the data will be lost but I do not want to try it with out confirmation that it will just try and repair the filesystem and not just go ahead and format the drive.

Can you confirm that if I use the "C" option (2 C) it will just try and repair the filesystem?

Dan,

What version are you using? you see in the Options Menu you should see 4 Configure Storage Disks. then you should have 3 choices.
F Format
C Check Storage Disks this is the one you need.

you could always boot knoppix and use this command e2fsck -t /dev/hda1

Hi Gaiden

Unfortunately I DID post to the wrong forum - I am using NASlite+ not NASlite 2.

Do you know if the filesystem is the same on version 2 as it is with NASlite+? If it is, I may consider upgrading.

Thanks for the idea of using Knoppix - will this work with a old computer system where the BIOS will not recoginze the 300G drive I am using. NASlite bypasses the BIOS so I can see this being a problem with Knoppix.

Hi Dan,

Naslite uses ext2 and so does V2 with the option of using ext3 by applying a journal.

I'd upgrade Dan, V2 has better tools to deal with your problem. plus a ton more.

i'd try this first.

provided that you can boot from CD Rom, I take it you was using the floppy version?

I am using the CD/floppy version - and will purchase V2 right now. Sorry for asking more questions but do you know if V2 will allow me to use the floppy (which contains my setup data) that I was using and will it recognize the data on it from my old install?

Hi Dan,

I'd use a clean floppy disk, V2 has more features then your old version.
Remember to follow the manual provided. V2 is more advanced the v1 as you will see. :D

Hi all,

I've got issues with failed disks as well (2 out of 4 drives on my NASLise2-CDD system are now in "FAILED" status).

Originally, these drives were connected to a SIL680 IDE controller (when they failed). Now I've got one of the drives slaved to my CDRom... but the system still fails that drive on startup.

When I telnet into the NAS, and select the failed drive, I choose option 6 "Check and Repair Disk-2 Filesystem"

The result is:

Does anyone have any idea's on how I can recover the data on this drive? (it's a Seagate 320 Gig IDE, with about 200 Gig's of data).

Is my only solution to use knoppix and run e2sfck?

If you are unable to use any of the NASLite tools to recover from this with your files intact, one option I suggest is Stellar software: http://www.stellarinfo.com/file-recovery.htm

The last time I used it, the trial version will show you if it can recover anything and then you can purchase the license if it can. You will need to install the software on one of your XP machines and then hook one of the bad drives up to the XP machine and run the software against it.

If you can/ do recover files, you will have to have enough space elsewhere to recover it to. I have used their products quite successfully on NTFS, FAT32 and HFS+ file systems but have never tried them on EXT file systems.
