I am trying to recommission an old PC (specs below) and I have gotten to the point of successfully assigning the licence code and network parameters. Yes, I saved the configuration and rebooted.

IP address - 192.168.1.88
Mask - 255.255.255.0
Broadcast - 192.168.1.255 (what is this?)
Gateway - 192.168.1.1 (the address of my ADSL modem/router)
^-- Also tried with no gateway

The NIC seems to be recognised (IRQ10 assigned) but I cannot ping to or from the box, even to the router. Needless to say this is stopping further progress.

This machine previously worked fine as a Windows box on my home network. The cable is fine; I used it to commission the replacement PC.

QUESTIONS

Is there something to try before buying a new NIC?

Is there a way to save the boot text that scrolls by very quickly to diagnose possible problems?

If I have to buy a new NIC, what inexpensive 10/100 cards are known to work?

SPECIFICATIONS

The NIC is a Netgear FA310TX REV-D2.

I perused the forum and decided to disable as much as I could in the BIOS:

Assign IRQ for USB - Disabled
Assign IRQ for VGA - Disabled
MODEM Use IRQ - NA
USB Keyboard Support - Disabled
ACPI function - Disabled
Power Managerment - Disabled

Motherboard is AOpen AX6BC with the most recent BIOS update: 2.59
CPU is Pentium III 450 MHz

That is a good NIC but I prefer the 3Com 3C905 for 100BaseTX. IF I were you I would be lookng for a Gigabit NIC. They are only about $20.00 USD and are a way to future proof your setup for cheap.

LittlePenguin,

Could you have disabled to much in the bios?

try to load system defaults and see if it works. if it does take care what you close down in the bios.

Thanks for confirming that this NIC works. When I quit suspecting the NIC, I began questioning all the things that "couldn't be the problem".

Ultimately I replaced the ethernet cable and voila it worked. Odd, because that same cable was working fine for commissioning my wife's new computer (the successor to this one that is now the NASLite server).

In any case I have NASLite-2 USB up and running now, so I'm a happy camper.

Thanks all.
