NASLite Network Attached Storage

I didn't see this in the PDF documentation or elsewhere... do we have confirmation on whether NASLite-2 support unicode filenames?

I'm guessing it still doesn't... but since there no longer appears to be a floppy disk version anymore, I'm crossing my fingers.

Aargh, does that mean that accented character in file names are changed?

This is a real pain. Is support for this so prohibitive??

I am still using Naslite+ and I don't have any problems creating directories using Greek unicode characters. In fact I almost certain that some files have greek chars.

No change in that respect. Chracter support is the same as NL1.

Although I did not install the NASlite system yet,
I am pretty sure that the Linux kernel should support unicode by default.
And the samba server will hand shake with host and client operation system to convert different unicode automatically.
How about the Ftpd? What kind of ftp server are you using in Naslite?

As far as I know, pur-ftpd can support different unicode, But not able to
negotiate, which means you have to specify the host unicode and client unicode on the command line. But that's not too bad either.

If you are using some ftp server without unicode supporting, or configuration,
then I can not see filenames other than ASCII code in the ftp client.

Can you tell me what the ftp server you are using?

In NASLite 1.x, if I copy a file with a Unicode/Chinese filename from a Windows XP machine to the NASLite share, it not only messes up the filename (turns it into garbled characters), but also prevents me from deleting it from the NASLite share.

The previously given reason for lack of support for this was the need to keep NASLite small. As I mentioned in my original post, I had hoped that since NASLite 2 no longer needs to fit on a floppy, that the additional size potentially available would make it possible to be added.

Sadly, no. I am either stuck with FreeNAS (which I have found to be much slower among other things) or picking another flavor of Linux and configuring it myself (which I am no expert at). In fact, there is a recent article (Tom's Networking) comparing performance of RAID 5 on FreeNAS to Ubuntu. However, I cannot speak for how fair or not their comparison is/was. I just know that on my network, I see an obvious difference in speed between NASLite & FreeNAS.

Whenever NASLite does support this feature, I will switch over in a heartbeat.
