Hi,

I am running off a supermicro box with 16 disks and am using a 3ware 9690SA that is connected to the backplane and the SAS expander. The 16 disks are 3 units of 8+TB raid6.

Naslite has worked for me before and all I need is a simple file server nothing else, everything needs to accessed locally so no security is needed and all backups are mirrored on a LTO.

Naslite boots fine everything works until I try and format the disks they do not format, crashes everytime. I was wondering my old server is out of commission which I had my naslite on before and I wish to transfer my license to the new machine, I noticed this is not possible, obviously a new system ID.

So basically my questions are do I need to unlock my naslite before I can format disks, if not why can not format my drives?

regards

Marcus

How much RAM do you have installed?

And, yes, I'm pretty sure you need to UNLOCK before you can format. ( It should have that option with a "*" until unlock ... if that's not the case then you are already unlocked. Check the "/<your_ip>/Status/htm/server.htm" page to see if a VALID lock is reported. )

Th system is not unlocked yet have just moved systems, but I can access the option to format (8). It is when I try that it does not work.

Is there a disk size limit?

Not sure but I just ran into a similar problem where the array failed to format. It turned out that the fix was to change the size of the slices written by the array controller to 16K rather than 32K or 64K.

bit a of a problem I think that in raid6 you can only have 64K as default on the 3ware 9690, I suppose I could try raid 5 on both disks instead...

OK- now have tried as everyone has suggested, have raided 5 at 16k still no joy, the disks are not mounted according to storage configuration just before I format?

I have bought a new license for this machine, and according to the hardware specs 3ware 9690SA 4I4E is supported no problem in the hardware specs

I am trying one more thing to intialize 2 x 9 TB RAID 5 with 16 K partitions will see how that gets on, I have no problem with this it just very time consuming intialising takes about 5 hours pers disk RAID

ANy suggestions would be appreciated

Try posting the syslog for Tony and Ralph to look at.

Try 2TB volume first. If it works, then try larger. I haven't tries a 9TB volumes but 2TB i know work fine. If 2 works and 9 doesnt then it may be a software issue. Dont know, just guessing here.

Could there be a limit imposed by the 32-bit core to NASLite-2.6?

here are the messages i get:

read: invalid argument

sfdisk: read error on/dev/discs/disc0/disc - cannot read sector 0
/dev/discs/disc0/disc : unrecoginsed partition table type
Old situation:
No partition fiund
New situation:
Units = cylinder of 1048576 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

Device boot start End Hcyls Hblocks Id System
/dev/discs/disc0/part1 1 0 0
/dev/discs/disc0/part2 0 - 0
/dev/discs/disc0/part3 0 - 0
/dev/discs/disc0/part4 0 - 0

Warning: partition 1 has size but is not marked EMPTY
Warning; no primary partion is marked bootable (active)
This does not matter with LILO, but DOS MBR will not boot this disk
sfdisk: read error on/dev/discs/disc0/disc - cannot read sector 0
Re-Reading the partition table.......

If you create or changed a DOS partition, /dev/foo?, say, then use dd(1)
to zero the first 512 bytes: dd if=/dev/foo? bs=512 count=1
(See fdisk(=).)

This page is then followed by

ERROR!

Formatting of Disk0 failed

I've heard of this happening on rare occasion with logical partitions but we've been unable to replicate the problem. Try booting a live distro and run fdisk on that volume. Make a partition on it and try with NASLite again.

Knoppix, Ubuntu, Win PE, anything you can run fdisk with. NASLite does not use fdisk, but in this case it may be helpful.
