Hi.

I have 3 identical SATA drives in my NL box. Disks 1 and 2 are mirrors of disk 0.

Is there a way to know which phsical hard drive corresponds to Disk-0, Disk-1 and Disk-2 ?

TIA and best regards.

I did the easy way and unplugged one at the time to see what showed up in the storage window. Then I marked the disks with a marker pen to know the order of them.

If you know which SATA channels the drives are each plugged into then it is easy. The first SATA channel is disk-0, the second is disk-1, etc. This assumes that the MB maker did not do some funky crap of course.

What soren is suggesting should not work with "identical" disks (then again ... they never are), especially mirrored ones. Reason is they are automatically renumbered. So, unless soren is not reporting a step in his process ... (see b] below)

In addition to what mikeiver1 said ... how about this ...

a] the S/N is listed in the details for each drive on the "file://///<NAS-ip>/Status/htm/storage-Disk-X.htm" page. So you can match up against S/N on HDD label.

b] If they are truly mirrored, then you could temporarily delete or add some large file(s) on one disk, check the status page for space used to differentiate them, then shutdown and unplug one of the disks, reboot and check again. This process is cumbersome and may have to be repeated a few times.

I suggest you label the CABLES near the HDD end, not the drives, and never unplug them from the motherboard to avoid mix-up.

Caution: Be aware that some motherboards could have a tendency to mix-up the drive sequence when you play with (or the board loses its config settings) in BIOS. I've had trouble with "Enhanced", "Legacy", "Combined" modes when using both IDE and SATA.

Thanks Georg.

As always, very clear and precise :) I'll see with the serial numbers (If I won't be obliged to physically unmount the drives). If not, copy big files on each drive with different sizes and unplug one drive at a time.

Regards
