hi all

I've been thinking about buying NASlite to use with an unused eeepc 4g.
Specifically, i'm talking about plugging in a couple of usb drives i have spare, and using the eeepc as a nas server for a home network.

I'm fairly sure that it (the eeepc) meets all the hardware requirements, with the exception of the CD drive (it doesn't have one!)

In a nutshell is there a way that i can install NASlite without buying an external CD drive.

I've checked various forums but cant find a 'howto' guide that relates to my particular problem.

thanks in advance for any advice

You can just build the HDD in another computer and then transfer it to the intended box. Another option is to create a bootable USB key and use that to build the HDD, this assumes that the box will boot from a USB device. Third option would be to buy a drive and use it for the build, then return it, kinda sleazy way to go but.... An external drive is not that much now days, look on Ebay since they are kinda handy to have around. For instance, times like these make them useful.

Does the EEE not have a memory card slot, and can it not boot from that? You could install to the memory card using another PC and then boot the EEE from that card.

It does have an SD card slot but as far as I'm aware its a complicated drawn about process making that SD card into a bootable device.

If anyone can suggest a guide for doing that I'd be grateful.

thanks for your replies so far
