If I use the mirror function to back up my NASLite to an external USB hard drive, could I then plug that USB drive into any computer and read the files on it?

MS windows does not read the EXT2 or EXT3 file system without a third party utility but yes in theory it should work.

Thanks for the response, Mike. Not what I was hoping for, however. So in order to have a backup drive readable by any Windows machine it would actually need to be created by a Windows computer on the network copying the files from the NASLite to the backup drive?

In essence, yes. Another option is to simply use the USB drive on any machine booted on a live Linux cd boot. That way you get access to both the USB drive and the windows drive/s as well.
