NASLite Network Attached Storage

I just loaded and configured, a NASLite instance.
PIII 1.0GHz
256MB Ram
80GB Drive

NasLite-2 HDD
Downloaded ISO, installed from ISO, following documentation.
Registered, unlocked, IPed, exported, etc.

Mapped a drive, I: to \\fileserver\Drive-0\ from WinXP-SP3, and copied 54MB of data to folder DOCS.
Now, mapped the same I: drive on 3 other PC's, 2XP, 1 Vista.

When PC-1 accesses file inside Folder DOCS, no other user can access the Folder, thus not the files inside the folder either. Popup says Access denied.
Once PC-1 exits file, the other user can access.

Did I miss a setting to allow more than 1 user
Please let me know what ever screen shots I need to post, to help diagnose issue.

Sounds like a file locking problem. I have NL2.0x and routinely access different files from the same directory at the same time with no problem other than the transfer rates going to hell.

I can see where I would run into issues with 1 file open, and next user attempting to open would get a "File already open, READ only allowed.

But second user cannot even acces the mapped share.
I have left office, will have to test if second user can access a different subfolder/file thatn the first user has open.

Will post results.
So, as far as you know, there is no "Only 1 user allowed" registration limit or something of that nature?

There is no user limit to the NL shares. As far as how many people can be accessing your NL box, the limit is based on the hardware being able to server the users in a timely manner. Fast drive array, lots of RAM, gigabit network= a very large number of concurrent users.

There is no user limit and access is unrestricted. The problem you are experiencing has never been reported before as far as I know, so if someone else is having the same issue, please speak up so we can review.

Tony, I can say that the problem is not with NL.

I built the box for another user. He emailed me this morning, and I quote...

"I love computers. And I hate when my employees do this to me.
I cannot replicate the problem. Yesterday, I could not get the problem to NOT happen. . . . .today, It works fine, no matter who is in the system.

I suck.

I called him and confirmed that the NL replaced an old XP box that was sharing.
Old name \\Fileserver\SharedFolder..
I think they were trying to access \\fileserver\SharedFolder\filename.xls in the recent file list in Excel. or word.
Instead of opening the file from mapped drive "I:". I was unable to "pull" that info out of the enduser.

In any case all works fine. Next time I will comfirm issue before posting. Feel free to bash the newbie

Hello all again.

The issue returned... This time I captured a screenshot of the error.
The error occured when clicking on the shortcut created, by me, a new one, to the newly mapped I: drive.

The issue is intermintant. All 7 PC's are experiencing the issue, but if I click OK and try again 3-5 times, it does eventually open the share.

First thought it was a DNS issue, as this is just a workgroup with no formal DNS server, I added a hosts entry into c:\windows\sysem32\driver\etc\hosts of:
192.168.1.250 filserver

I was hoping this would help. It did not. I added it to all the PC's anyway, because it and the printer are the only 2 static IP devices on the network.

I am think now maybe a troublesome nic, but how to test.

I will attach the syslog from a fresh boot in next post.

Below are the specs of the NL Server.

Hard Drive - I pick MAX PIO, options are Enhanced DMA, Ultra DMA 0, MAX UDMA, PIO 0,

I had to change the IP to match my network 10.X, from a 192.168, to test other than that NL is the same..

I did notice that during the reboot, just for testing, for testing sake. I do get the same error when the NL is in the reboot stage after the Kernal is decompressing. This leads me more to think that the nic is "locking" or has issues when in operation. There but not there..

It looks like windows being the browse master for the workgroup is caching the naslite ip and when you reboot with a different one you can't log in. Cached credentials will cause that error, but it's not naslite that's causing it. This could happen with a windows server just the same. That is different than what you posted earlier.

Unfortunately I was quoting the end-user in my first post. I had not seen the error.
I was simply going off what he was saying. Repeating what info I was given.

As you can see, I have now gotten the facts straight and have the NL server sitting right here next to me.

On a side note, I have replaced the NIC, which was a Netgear FA311, with a Netgear GA311.
I was also "told" that his current hub has a dead port. Which may be the root of my problem.
If his hub is going south, that may explain why the problen is intermittent.

I am attemopting to arrage a time to access the office this weekend to put the NL back.
Test again, and then replace hub and test. See if was the NIC or the HUB.

Will update post once I have some data to report.

First off, throw the "hub" away and get a good switch. One with a gigabit port for the uplink to the server and the rest 100BaseTX ports will be just fine and cheap to be had on Ebay.

Next, reinstall the NL server with all the WinBlows PCs off and then bring them up after the NL machine is quiescent. If the network is small and not likely to grow you might just assign them all static IPs and be done with it. You may also be getting a problem if the IP range of the NL server falls in the lease range of DHCP server on the network.

It was the network and an IP issue.....

Let start, from the cable modem into a lynksys router.
The linksys had all 4 connections used, 1 to dumb hub, 1 to a lynksys wiress gateway and the other 2 to PC.s

The Wiresless gateway had its 4 LAN connections in use as well and the hub had 5 as well.

I only counted 9 network devices to include the nl server, and 2 were wireless.

The "CAT5" cable between the cable modem and the router was a 2 pair, not 4 pair.
And the Pièce de résistance .....The NL IP that I used was also the WAN interface address if the wireless gateway.....
Neither showed a conflict, not that I could see anywere.

After removing hub and contions in to wireless, into a Intel Class 2 hub, 16-port, sorry did not have a switch handy.
Everything is comminicating just fine. Not getting the error, and 1 less hop on the network.
