Setting the time seems to be a challenge. I telnet to the proper admin page, than go to the set time and date page. I have set the correct internet gateway and have tried local and other time servers and it works ok except NasLite-2 sets the time ahead one day and several hours (didn’t note how many hours)??
Has anybody had this problem? What’s the fix? It only makes sense to have the correct time.

It seems, it would be so much easier to offer a box to off-set the time to your time zone
(-8 =PST) and a yes/no for DST.

Maybe it could be added to the next version (hint, hint)

I'm not sure I understand since GMT on the server will yield local time on the client provided the client is set with the appropriate time-zone. That is especially true if you are syncing the NAS to an authoritative time server. Being off 24+ hours is even more confusing.

To clear the confusion let's start by checking the time on the server (GMT obviously) and also checking the time on the client (local I assume), then considering the time-zone, they should be inline. If not one of the two is off. If the server is off, then make sure it is in fact syncing by checking the status screens.

Hope that helps.

Tony Tonchev (Server Elements) I followered your advise and checked the time and

#1. Server Bios= reset to my current local time (California-PST)
#2. NasLite 2 software on nas= manually reset to local time (option 6)
#3. Checked network gateway= correct
#4. Changed time server= 129.6.15.28 (NIST Gaithersburg Maryland)
#5. Saved settings.
#6. Reboot.

The next day (24 hours) I checked the system NasLite2 status screen. It showed a successfully sync but it is 7 hours advanced.(?)

Tony, I’ll try the same thing except, I’ll set the time server to a California server (shouldn’t matter) 64.125.78.85 WiTime, San Jose, CA. and advise tomorrow.

Tony, After the system restarted, I checked the "set system date and time" item 6. It has set itself to 7 hours ahead. Is this normal? How can we set the system to keep the accurate local time?

Not knowing where you are Walt I have to guess that you are in the mountain time zone and the clock on the NL box is GMT. Why not just let the time sync on the windows box go out and get the time like it has done since Windows98?

NASlite-2 has no concept of a timezone offset, so the problem has to be on the client end. An internet time server will always provide time in GMT, and since NASLite does not provide a locale offset, the NAS clock will also be set to GMT without offset. What that means is there is absolutely no way to sync the NASlite clock to a time other than the exact time provided by the internet time server. Considering that, the +7hrs has to be introduced by your client since NASlite has no facilities to do so.

What you can do is take a look at the NAS filesystem using HTTP and compare the timestamps listed there to the ones your windows machine reports via CIFS. That should provide you with sufficient information on where the problem may be.

Hi Tony, Wow (your starting to lose me) my NAS machine is not running windows of any kind only NasLite2.
I checked the "system status screen, server logs screen and also the telnet admin time-setting screen they all show the same time when the system was last rebooted/restarted. I noticed, when the system shuts-down NasLite resets the system (bios) time (?) this is why I manually reset the bios time before I went on to the other steps in the previous message..

I checket my Linksys router and its set to the proper -8 pacific time (my local).
I understand GMT (Great Britain) is 0 and everybody else is either + or - #.
So am I to understand NasLite2 will always report the time as GMT? which is +8 hours ahead of my locale.

Does the "RSYNC" service set to read only (by default) have anything to do with this problem?

still scratching my head :?

Do you have a working CMOS battery on that machine? NASLite would not reset the time during reboot as far as I know, sounds like a bad CMOS battery resulting in loss of synced clock.

Yes, with a clarification:

NASlite itself syncs and keeps GMT. That is why when you look at the admin interface and examine the filesystem via HTTP, the timestamps will always be GMT. When you access the NAS server via SMB, FTP, NFS, AFP and rsync using a client machine however, the time will be adjusted by your client's timezone setting and averything will appear as your client's local time.
