I've been in IT for 7 years and this software is making me feel like a moron.

I purchased NASLite-2HDD.

Through trial and error I've tried booting from a USB Drive & CD Rom. I know I'm missing something critical here but I can find no instructions on what to do with the ISO image. I've tried the following:
1. Placed the SEI-NL2-HDD.iso image on a Flash drive.
2. Placed the SEI-NL2-HDD.iso image on CD
3. I've mounted the .ISO image and placed the contents on both a USB Drive and CD Rom (in the root)
4. Placed the contents of the Boot folder in the root of a Flash Drive & CD ROM.

I usually don't need to go near manuals but I've had to go over it many times this evening without success. Here is what the NASLite-2-Manual.PDF says about installation:

"This is very much a conventional installation, so bootable IDE fixed disk, an IDE Flash drive or equivalent are necessary as a destination for the install. NASLite-2 HDD boot files take up very little space and using a 16MB or larger Flash should be sufficient. If a fixed disk is used, it is possible to configure and use the remaining capacity of the fixed disk as storage.

For the initial NASLite-2 HDD setup, youĂll need to have a monitor and a keyboard connected to the
computer. To begin installation, boot from the distribution CD-ROM and allow the setup utility to display the initial menu screen. NOTE: Installing NASLite-2 HDD on a disk will reformat the disk in its entirety. Any existing data on the disk will be lost and should be backed up prior to installation.

Choose a destination disk at the NASLite-2 HDD Installation Utility Menu Screen. Follow the Installation Utility on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Once installation is complete, the computer is ready to boot NASLite-2 HDD. Turn on the computer and make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the appropriate disk. After the boot sequence is complete, the initial login screen will be displayed."

THE ABOVE TEXT DOESN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH THE .ISO FILE!!!!

I know the answer will be simple so please help a silly SystemAdmin figure this out before he pulls all his hair out.

T

PS. In case you are wondering, I did change the boot sequence to search for the correct device (Flash, CD ROM etc). I'm currently looking at the latest error message, which is pretty much the same message I've received all evening:

" Searching for Boot Record from CD/DVD-1..Not Found
Boot Failure
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device.
Press any key when ready"

What exactly did you all that time?

The iso you got is a cd-rom image file http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image and can be burned on a cd using cd-rom burning software like nero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_Burning_ROM, look at image burning.

Wow! What a useless reply. Please don't bother posting if you don't have the intelligence to do so. If you had any, you'd have assumed I would know what an .iso file is. Otherwise how would I have opened the image?????

My point is, the manual doesn't explain how to use it.

Let me give it another shot. How did you burn the iso on the CD?

OK, apologies for the shortness in my reply. I'm tired.

I've figured it out for myself. For anyone else that might come up against this in the future, the issue was caused by the fact that I was using a Mac to burn the .iso images. For some reason, this wasn't burning a CD that would boot on the PC, even though the image was burnt as a PC compatible CD and read fine in XP.

I downloaded "ISO Recorder Power Toy" and burnt the image directly from Windows 2003 SBS and it worked fine. (Didn't have a working PC with XP to play with)

If any of the admins are reading this, it might be handy to mention this in future updates in the manual. Not all of the NASLite users will be working from a PC. (Yes I know we are installing this on PC hardware).

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Over the last 4 years of developing NASLite, my G4, Powerbook, Intel Mini and iMac (using Tiger and Leopard) have never had a problem burning the iso image, and I use a Macintosh exclusively.

A little more detail might help us diagnose your issue, how your trying to burn it and your hardware setup ie: if your using a 3rd party cdrom drive.

Although this is not an issue with NASLite or the iso image, we do from time to time have to walk people thru burning a cdrom, and as you said, this may help someone who may have the same difficulty.
