Hi, I just purchased Naslite-2 HDD and got everything set up and running. Bootup shows no failures (except the Unlock code) and the mounting of my disk is successful as well. However, when attempting to navigate to the Status page for Naslite to obtain an unlock code, the main page hangs on the graphic but displays the share information. For instance, at the main page for the Naslite I see the following:

access user group date size name

drwxrwxrwx admin admin Apr 23 01:30 <DIR> Disk-0
drwxr-xr-x admin admin Apr 23 02:32 <DIR> Status

but the graphic on the top of the page fails to load. Further, clicking on "Status" to take me to the status page results in a "page not found" or the like. Reboots have been unsuccessful. Strangely, I cannot ping other machines from the Naslite box, nor can I ping the Naslite box from my other machines on the network. Please help! If I can provide further details, let me know. Thanks!

Check your netmask and make sure it's correct. Also, how much RAM do you have? If you have over 64M, then make sure your RAM is good.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply. My netmask is fine (255.255.255.0), the same as used by other machines on my network. I do have over 64M of RAM, but it is certainly possible that it is bad. Unfortunately I don't know of an easy way to test that other than to try different RAM (any ideas?). This machine used to run Windows 98, but hasn't seen any use in a while.

The weird thing is that you can get to that first page, just not the Status page and you can't ping to or from that machine after loading that page.

I've turned off SMART, ACPI, and all unnecessary options from the BIOS (usb, onboard modem, onboard soundcard, etc) to try to quell this. I've tried different IP address assignments in Naslite as well to no avail.

My router is a Linksys wrt-54g running dd-wrt with dhcp and dnsmasq (tried it without dnsmasq as well). The Naslite box has an assigned IP of 192.168.1.11 which is out of the range of the dhcp assignments (which start at 192.168.1.100).

I know my Naslite configuration is fine, I guess at this point it's a matter of either a network setup problem or a hardware problem like you mentioned. I've tried different CAT-5 cables just for giggles, too. I suppose the onboard NIC could be malfunctioning also... The one message that does print that seems "abnormal" during Naslite startup is a message about ieee1394 being forced to serialize for sbp2. Does that have any significance? I originally though this was referring to my soundcard, but I'm not sure that the onboard soundcard is even a sound blaster (operating under the assumption that sbp2 is sound blaster pro 2).

Just hoping someone else has seen something similar in the past with a similar network setup. I can post more details about my hardware here if that might be helpful.

Thanks again, hope I can get this working!

[edit]: Ah, sbp2 is serial bus protocol 2, a "tunnel for scsi". My drives aren't scsi, so I don't think this has much bearing...

Well, without any more suggestions for what might be wrong, I tried out FreeNAS and it's working great..... no problems whatsoever so I doubt this was a hardware problem, perhaps just a Naslite compatibility issue with my particular configuration (though my hardware more than exceeds the NASLite minimum specs). I know the underlying systems are different (FreeBSD vs. Linux) but I purchased Naslite-2 with the hopes that a purchase meant a bit more in the way of support and/or out of the box maturity. Should have done my homework first and tried both out.

You definitely have something misconfigured. We'd be more than happy to still help you troubleshoot your issue.

With the literally thousands of NASLite installations out there, I can guarantee you there is nothing wrong with the software and unsupported hardware would not cause what your describing.

Hi Ralph, Working in the software industry myself, I know how difficult these sorts of out-of-the-blue random problems are to diagnose, so I don't fault the software or you (sorry if it came out this way). I appreciate your prompt reply. I'm sure this is some weird configuration problem - either directly with how I set up NASLite or with the way my particular network is setup. FWIW, here are the settings I used:

==Network==
IP Address of NASLite server: 192.168.1.11
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Router IP address: 192.168.1.1
(same exact settings used successfully on FreeNas setup)

==BIOS==
SMART disabled
Onboard modem disabled
ACPI disabled
USB disabled
Onboard soundcard disabled
AMI Bios (American Megatrends I think.... BIOS is from 1999)

==Hardware==
Everything onboard mobo....some generic intel based, could investigate further
Celeron 367 mhz
128 mb ram (BIOS check shows 131522 KB RAM good)
1 Seagate 4gb hdd on ide0 cable as primary (jumper on primary also)
HP Cd writer on seperate ide

The disk was recognized from the start of installation. During setup, I was able to mount the disk fine, [and after saving configuration and restarting] the disk shows up as mounted during boot. As I said before, no FAILs during startup except for the Unlock code.

Another interesting test I ran tonight was to restart NASLite then ping another machine on my network. The ping worked great - no dropped packets, transmission errors, etc. I then attempted to access the web configuration on the NASLite box from the same machine I pinged. The page never loaded. I then tried pinging again from the NASLite box and this time I got "no route to host" errors for every ping.

Thanks again for offering to help. Let me know if I can supply more details!

No offense taken, thanks for the clarification.

First, make sure no other devices on your network have the same IP address as the one your giving NL, ping this address and make sure. I have a /27 here and still find myself doing the above at times.

Correct me if I'm seeing this wrong, you can mount shares fine, but the status pages won't come up?

Also, please post the syslog from NL to verify we're not having an IRQ issue.

Thanks.

Can you identify the NIC you are using?

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't think I can post the syslog because the Status page won't load for me to be able to see it. Is there a way to get the syslog from the NASLite console? The NIC is onboard the mobo. I'll have to do a bit of investigation to get the details of it. I'll do that tonight after work.
