Hi all,

I currently have a NASLite-2 box built, and I am regularly requiring files on my NAS whilst I am away from home. Is there any way I can access the NAS box from my laptop whilst I am away from home?

I was thinking I may have to setup some sort of VPN, and I currently have a Linksys router & ADSL modem.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

no-ip.com only gets you some of the way to remote access (ie, allocate a domain name to the host IP, if you dont know the IP address).

You need to either/or:-

1) VPN in (what model Linksys router do you have?)

Thus you will be on the home LAN. A Linksys WRT54G for example will serve VPN with the right flavour of DDWRT firmware.

2) run a web server on another box on the home LAN that serves the NAS box shares.

eg, Abyss X1 Web server is free and can be set up on various boxes on the LAN.

This will also allow you to add password protection to the shares....you dont want to dish your NAS up to the net unprotected do you ?

3) no-ip.com or dyndns.org to dynamically allocate your home IP so you can find it.

I am using Gene6 ftp server on my PC accessed from france. I can RW SSL encrypted files through their UNC paths on my local host; however I can not achieve this route to my NL file server by either path or mapping. has anyone got a simple solution to accessing NL via ftp(se), pls. jeffjohn

My DLink DIR-655 802.11/n and 1000bT router has the option of no-ip/dyndns/any dynamic dns built into the firmware.

http://support.dlink.com/emulators/WBR2 ... s_ddns.htm

i simply plug in the necessary info, point it to the internal ip address (NASLite machine) and whammo! i can access it anywhere via myNASLiteserver.no-ip.org

heck, i even have a shortcut to it on my laptop's desktop....

thanks - Are you saying I can I have a second no-ip sub-domain that points exclusively to the Naslite server?
I thought the problem would be that the router will open the relevant ports to ONE selected internal IP address i.e. 192.168.1.2 (my PC) running the no-ip DUC. Can I set other independent IP addresses such as the NL's 192.168.1.30 ? I really want to access both the PC and the NL; if this were another PC I would just run another DUC on that installation and allocate a different sub-domain (I think!). Are you accessing more than the NL IP address on the LAN by ftp?? jeffjohn

i have port forwarding setup for AFP/SMB/FTP access setup for NL and then VNC/Remote Desktop and SageTV ports forwarded to my HTPC.

You should have no problem setting up access to both machines, but they will have to be set up on different ports.

Excuse me for interrupting the enthusiasm but aren't these wide open unsecured accesses?

ie. one only needs to know the IP address or allocated domain name to access?

Security -To a degree perhaps, but I am using SSL secure encryption with MD5 hash protected passwords to the FTP Server; also restricted IP access so I don't think there is much of a problem.
I still don't understand how you say I can address the NL externally as I won't know its dynamic IP address only its local IP; can I set up NL to listen for FTP on a different port? Is that what I am being told???
Usually running no-ip /DUC on each LAN networked PC enables a no-ip sub-domain to explicitly address that PC. I can't see how the NL is addressed specifically; could you spell it out for me?
Basically I am trying to get from the accessed PC to files on the NL on the same local workgroup. thanks for your comments, jeffjohn

you need to forward a port on the router over to the naslite box... say port 21 for this example

then from outside your network you go to ***.***.***.***:21 and it'll conect you to the naslite box...
(***.***.***.*** being your internet ip address)

or if you're using no-ip.com then you can go to http://www.TheNameYouSetup.com:21 and that will work too :)

Many thanks to all who helped; finally got what I wanted following alxr101's advice; i.e. set up a secure WebServer with links to the Naslite local IP and Security Cameras. Seems to work fine! Great forum for help and endless patience! jeffjohn.

This posting had some more detail on setting up SSL HTTPS etc and password-protected web links to a NAS box via an XP box running Aprelium X1 web server.

Is this a possible solution to accessing the NL from my webserver?

Map NL to PC :- 'Z'

Set up webserver alias:- \naslite , real path '/Z'

URL http://www.mywebserver/naslite ?

can't readily test it but should it work?

You dont need to set up a drive letter for the network path :-)

Virtual path /disk0

RealPath:- \\192.168.0.52\Disk-0

or \\NAS\Disk-0

Both work, assuming NAS is that IP address. I have both versions working as we speak.
THE SLASH IS IMPORTANT.. ie ... / forward slash or \ and \\ for backward slashes.
If not accessing the NAS you can also use the IP address for another computer or webcam.

alxr101- well after 50M attempts, I finally got to set an alias and 'see' my Naslite files. Maybe I was unduly slow-witted, but apparently if you set up the Webserver Abyss to start up with the system files, it won't be aware of attached shares. I switched to start on sign-in and lo-and-behold, Naslite and the mapping /Z plug-ins etc etc were all there.
The solutions are always clear once resolved but drive you to distraction until identified - no help from the 'Support' link. I would have thought some guidance on this rather esoteric feature would be warranted (or is it 'obvious' ?} Again many thanks to forum members for unflagging patience and help. jeffjohn
