NASLite Network Attached Storage

Hello folks,

Tony here from Cisco (not the developer) and new to Server Elements - been following the app for about 18 months and TOTALLY think it rocks. I recently installed my first NAS server last weekend and have been slowly uploading data to it since. Here's my setup:

* Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1.80GHz
* 512MB RAM
* Lacie 500Gb drive via USB2
* 10/100 Ethernet

Ok, so this morning at boot time, the drive was at about 25%-30% capacity and running like a champ. I had lots more data to migrate to it so I can rebuild my Macbook. I had several CD\DVD masters that I wanted to upload - about 40G in total and these files transferred with zero incident. However, shortly after the copy completed, the server started experiencing SERIOUSLY reduced response times. I am connecting to the volumes via AFP and the delays I saw were when viewing the volume via the Apple Finder. What I would see are things like the spinning beachball whenever creating new directories and changing directories but it was not consistent - only about 1/2 the time. I checked the system via the HTML GUI and I was running pretty high CPU - between 65% and 99%. I could also hear what sounded like LOTS of disk activity even when I wasn't doing anything to the system and nothing was supposed to be copying or moving around.

Now here's the thing- after about 10-15 minutes, the system seemed to settle down - the disk activity ceased and the system has been acting normally - good thing here - but what I am wondering s what happened?

Was the Linux kernel performing some garbage collection\rearranging\clean-up\etc. after the copy was complete and the delays I observed were due to the system performing some kind of background operations?

I bet you had a bad connection or something. I've had problems like that with usb. Not only with Naslite but with Windows too.
