Hiya,

I'm used to backing up to a firewire ext hdd, it does not take long.

I've set my simple hdd nasbox up and it takes (as above), I'm not all that bright when it comes to pc's :(
I guessed the network would be slower than the firewire, but had no idea it was going to be that slow, is this normal ?

If it is not normal, any suggestions as to what I may have set up wrong would be appreciated :)

Many thanks

Let's see here, fire wire runs at 400Mb/sec and 100tx network runs at 100Mb/sec. Right there we have a four to one difference in speed. But there is likely more to this than just that.

You likely have an issue with IRQs on your NAS box that needs to be resolved. An upgrade to Gigabit might also be a good idea since the hardware can be had for about $75.00 for a pair of NICs and a Gigabit switch.

Post your log file to this thread so we can have a look for any problems.

Mike

Cheers Mike,

400 and 100 sound familar, thinking about it, thats quite a difference :o

I'll see if I can get a log snapshot now, its still backing up, and I guess it will be a day or so before it finishes.

:)

As far as I can guess, I think Apr 13 should be Apr 21 (the battery is very old that remembers the date)
I look forward to hearing any comments and hope I have the correct bit of log. I thought it would have been a bit longer considering all the work the nas is doing...

Thank you

:)

After some use, say an hour or so of transfers, are you getting multiple seek errors like these:

Apr 13 19:38:07 user.warn kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Apr 13 19:38:07 user.warn kernel: hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

Ah.. does that mean I have to run the backup again and look for those errors ?

Maybe I'll try a copy (rather than a wipe and start again), which will check all the files, but copy only one or two that have been changed.

:)
