A customer asked online support today about how reliable is NASLite-2. Ralph answered as he felt appropriate, but how would a user answer that?

Been using it for four years+ and have yet to loose a single file. This is with changes in hardware and software and multiple migrations of drives to different hardware. Bullet proof comes to mind.

Many years, hundreds of deployments, variety of users and all kinds of hardware, it just works. Naslite has never let me or my clients down. For basic shared storage there is none better.

File loss in more likely down to human error or Hardware, I never lost a file due to naslite, but I nuked 80GB of files myself... ( was a bad day )
Oh and its far more reliable then WHS and its file corruption problems.

The major problem with Naslite is that it works. As someone who likes to "tweak" with things, Naslite gives me no reason to have to "tweak" it. Naslite just keeps on working, it is brainless.. in that I never have to think about if it is going to work or let me down.

I was concerned about the boot up procedure where the Naslite computer has to communicate with the the Server Elements computer to get activated each time it starts up. What if something happens to the Server Elements activatioin server or...?? So I took out one of my Naslite hard drives put it into a USB case. I downloaded a freeware Linux format hard drive reader for windows and volia I was reading my Naslite hard drives.

Is Naslite reliable.. Yes

Running for 2+ years and no problems. As someone said previously. I am a tweaker but there is really nothing to do, it just works. Waiting for the iTunes server so I can play with it.

The software doesn't do that on each boot, just when you make a configuration change in hardware and need a new key. Take the computer off the internet network and you will find that it boot just fine.

It has been running for 3+ years with no real problems. In fact I often forget I have it until I go down to the basement and see the blue lights on the box. It has been six months since I rebooted for whatever reason (usually tinkering with it). The only problem I have is with IRQ conflicts, but I think I might have that solved. (not sure because I have forgotten I even had the thing in my house)

IMHO the "big 3" differentiators for NASLite+ are:

1. Reliability - the product is simply rock solid.
2. Ease of setup and administration - let's face it, anybody with a rudimentary understanding can setup and manage NL.
3. Value for money - at less than $30 this product is a steal.

Some thought on speed and hardware:

The product is also very fast, but I think there are much faster NASes out there. The problem is that they all sacrifice 1 or more of the three factors above. I would say NL is probably the fastest NAS out there that also is relaible, easy and cheap.

Support for older hardware is excellent, pretty much anything that's been out there a while is supported. Support for newer hardware is lacking. I understand this is mostly due to the fact that ServerElements does not want to sacrifice differentiators 1, 2 and 3 listed above. I'm sure the authors could add support for all sorts of new hardware, but reliability would almost certainly suffer.

I love my NL box... I had it up and running within about 30 minutes and had another HDD installed and running within about another 15

Obviously software can only be as stable as the hardware its upon but albeit that it's rock solid and well worth $30

I've also found the forums to be a good resource and the people to be very friendly (which is becoming more and more rare these days)

Overall I give NL-2 a 9 out of 10 lacking a single point for missing SMB permissions

As far you care about your hardware then NASLITE is absoultely safe. just make sure your box have a good cooling system . and you may put some extra fan for your hard drive & power supply which will make ur box robobust almost server quality so less chance to hardware crash . like power supply failur or hard drive crash due to non stop running over the periods

I would answer it thusly:

Quote:
While it is extremely difficult to put a measurement on stability, NASLite 2 is developed to prioritize stability over wide hardware compatibility. Anecdotal reports from our customers portray exceptionally low accounts of data loss and exceptionally long uptimes. There have been concerns raised about new hardware compatibility in terms of RAID cards and such, but we publish a fairly complete guide of compatible hardware which can be used as a purchasing guide, and, again, we strive for stability first.

..they might not be your thoughts, but it is the feeling i get from NASLite as i sit and look at it... used constantly all day long... no unplanned service interruptions since it was put on a UPS... Simply rock solid.
