Hello,

I use NL-USB in a machine with these specifications:
- Asus M2N-VM DVI (Motherboard)
- AMD 4800+ (CPU)
- 2 GB Kingston Value Ram 667 (DualChanel)
- 1x 500 GB HDD IDE
- 1x 500 GB HDD SATA
- 1x 300 GB HDD IDE
- 1x 250 GB HDD IDE

First of all I've got trouble with the onboard-LAN.
The problem is just that NL doesn't find any LAN. Instead of the start-screen there is only a message that NL couldn't find any LAN-Card and will shut down.
In the motherboard BIOS I can choose either LAN-off or LAN-auto, whereas it doesn't make any difference what I choose.
To solve the problem I installed a PCI Gigabit-Lan Card which was properly acceptet by NL. But I think the server would be faster with the onboard-Lan controller.

Does anyone has an answer for this problem?

Than I've got a question about mirroring.
My NL isn't working 7/24, but only a few minutes (houres) a day. I just switch it on, if I need it. In the manual I read, that if the "hour parameter" is set on "00" the mirror will sync "at the beginning of each new day".
Does this mean, that if I set the hour parameter to "00", the mirroring will be done each day the first time I switch on the server? Or has the server be working at 00:00 (midnight)?

Best regards

Christoph

First off there is likely no difference between the on board LAN card and one plugged into a free PCI slot. That being said with no IRQ conflicts to be had. The on board NIC is hanging off of the PCI bus. Just turn it off and leave the NIC in the PCI slot.

As far as turning off your NL box and only bringing it up for a few minuets of use, not well advised. You are putting allot of ware on the drives and a whole boat load of thermal stress on the electronics. Just leave it running! If power is an issue then drop the video card and clock it back to slower speeds to save more power.

Hello Mike,

Thank you very much for your answer!

Well I thought that Onboard-Lan could be faster because I also use a PCI-IDE Controller to control the 4 IDE Harddisks with.
At this time I got a maximal speed of about 500 Mbit/s (I hoped that I would reach about 800 Mbit/s with my new hardware).

Power is not the main issue why I don't want to "just leave it running". I don't use any video card but a onboard-vga-adapter. The problem is the thermal output and the noise. At this time I haven't got any possibility to ban the server out of my workplace. So I have to sit just a few meters away from the NL. In the room it's already more than hot enough (especially in summer) and I don't like the sound of just another machine running all time long. So I just switch it on, when I need it.
I hope that I will be soon able to put the machine down in the cellar and than I will leave it running all day long. But for this time...

They are all on the same PCI bus most likely anyway so don't worry about it. Unless you have a PCI-e interface you are at the limits of performance I would guess.

But I've got a PCI-e interface (one PCI-e 1x and one PCI-1 16x) :D

So what do I need? A PCI-e LAN-Card? Something like this perhaps: http://www.toppreise.ch/prod_115839.html?

Not sure if the PCI-e version of the NIC is supported under NL but that is exactly what I would get. Tony or Ralph?

Remember that the 1x PCI-e interface is good for around 200MB/sec and it is separate from the PCI bus in most cases.

Good luck and post if you get it and it works.

So could anybody plaese confirm that NL supports a PCI-e NIC? :D

Of course I will post if anything changes ;)
