Howdy, I dove into my first install of NASLite-2. My first mistake was I think I bought the wrong license. I was hoping that if I wanted to use my HDD for loading NASLite so I purchased the HDD version. Then I learned that it was really meant to be loaded on a seperate HDD not the data HDD's. I then thought what the heck, I'll try to install it on a USB drive and was able to do that. I loaded the license and unlocked it and so far so good.

QUESTION: Is it OK if I'm using a HDD version on my USB drive?

Next up, I am using two brand new MAXTOR 500GB PATA HDD's. They are connected to a LSI MEGARAID 511 HW raid controller. I noticed when I built the array in the MEGARAID bios that it showed the drives as 131GB not 500GB. So I thought that they must have been pre-partitioned. I then removed the raid controller and connected the drives to the MB HDD controller and when setting the MB BIOS to AUTO it showed 500 GB. I then booted the MAXBLAST V4 CD and went in and changed the partitions from 137GB to the full 500 GB. I thought I had the problem licked....
So, I went back through the MEGARAID BIOS and built the array again, but it still thinks that the drives are only 131GB. WHAT????

OK, well I thought I would just continue with the NASLite configuration just for the pactice. I set the storage up and formated it but still even NASLite thinks it is only 131GB.

Any ideas on why the MEGARAID controller thinks they are only 131GB? Before loading the MEGARAID controller I did turn OFF the drives in the MB BIOS.

Thanks for the help.

Also, how should I mount these drives from Windows XP? If I try to access the the share by using the ADD NETWORK DEVICE and putting in \\10.0.0.40\Disk-0 it comes up with a Windows box asking me for username/password. The username is alraedy filled in as \\10.0.0.40\Disk-0 and it is GREYED out and then in the password window I've tried serval passwords with no luck. How is the best way to mount this under Windows XP so that the drive is available at boot time?

Here is a snipit of my syslog:

The MegaRAID cards BIOS needs to be updated.

You can just use the map network drive option in the windows Explorer.

If you can't find the firmware needed to flash you raidcard,
let us know, we'll provide you with the needed files

NickC had a similar problem with that raidcard
and I had to flash both my cards to get them working

After that never had problems with it

About mapping to your drives:
I believe Disk-0 is the system drive
You need to map to Disk-1 (cap sensitive)
Mine is \\Server\Disk-1

Flashing the MEGARAID BIOS did the trick, it now sees the Physical and logical drives as 497gb (or thereabouts). The hardest part was finding 2 blank floppies. I had to turn the house upside down. You need 2 floppies because the OS and the 2 files needed to flash the bios won't fit all on 1 floppy.

THANKS GUYS!!!!!

The mount problem is halfway solved.
net use x: \\server\Disk-0 works just fine for NON-DOMAIN computers....

I'll post a new topic with the rest of that saga...

I Didnt realise NasLite-2 should be loaded on a separate hard drive, Ive got NasLite on the same drive as my data, Disk-0 and Disk-1 with more data. Ive got a spare drive should I put NL2 on that and then have my data on Disk-1 and Disk-2.

Hope the above makes sense

Why not use a cf to ide and boot from a cf. But otherwise you can boot from a small ide drive and leave the raid for data only as you are suggesting.
