FTP does have a much lower overhead than does Samba. Remember that MicroShaft is always trying to move the target so as to make their server perform better than the likes of NL and other Linux/Unix based servers.

A fresh load seems to perform much better.

Always could replace your switch, cheap ones seem to perform worse than the newer ones out now.

It's not the switch. I put a xover cable inbetween the two machines and get the same results.
