I've seen this in my logs many times and am not sure what it means:

10.1.1.1 is my gateway/router -
Could this be related to a RIP protocol enabled on the router?

Check your subnet masks on your network and make sure it's correct. Here is a link to some icmp messages. Another idea might be a firewall issue.

Read up on errors listed on the link provided - not much I found applies.

The errors continue to stack up in the log but performance and stability seem fine. I'll just write it off as kernel feedback and keep using the NAS.

If anyone else has seen this though, a solution/workaround or better explination would be great.

What is the nas ip? I think you have a netmask problem. Make sure all members of your lan have the same netmask.

My NasLite NAS IP is 10.1.1.40

This is the info I got for my LAN when I looked it up:

List of networks
for the 10.1.1.0 network with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Network Hosts Broadcast Address from to
10.1.1.0 10.1.1.1 10.1.1.254 10.1.1.255

The IP scope I've been using is 10.1.1.x and the subnet mask for all systems on the LAN is set for 255.255.255.0 -

This has nothing to do with NASLite, the problem is with the router at 10.1.1.1, it's sending a host unreachable ICMP to the broadcast address, which every host on the network sees, NASLite is simply logging it.

I'd look at the router config and see what it's trying to connect to, probably a time server, remote syslog, maybe even something UPNP somewhere.

It appears that enablind RIP within the router is the source -
When rip is disabled or changed to outbound only the info in the log stops or becomes less frequent.

Good to know - and I don't notice a difference either way -
