Guess I'm like everyone. When you tell me you have a product which only needs 6MB to run - I'm gonna buy the least expensive good memory I can find and call it a day. Unfortunately, that may not be be best course.

Somehow managed to trash a new large drive which was almost completely filled with video files (99% - I know, you are not supposed to cram them like this). Repeated attempts to salvage with the menu e2fsck tools failed - providing lots of "killed" errors.

Then took the gamble of adding a second 128MB memory stick (based upon gleanings from this forum). It recovered the files completely.

So it would be wonderful Tony and Ralph, if you could develop a chart quantifying the *true* memory requirements vs. installed disk volume :) Otherwise, cheapskates like me will paint ourselves into corners.

Can't you see those multi terabyte disks coming?

Just wondering the size of the volume/disk in question.. ??

I have had the luxury of having several clunkers around so I have had a surplus of memory in my boxes and naslite seems to always use it all.

Was using 250GB IDE. Now using 500GB SATA.

You're lucky - I still have 6 sticks to purchase :)

Well, that's a very relative thing, usually based on the number and size of files as well as the size of the drive. Assuming we are running services in about 30MB at boot time, one can oversimplify and formulate the following:

(RAM - 30) * 2 = HDS

Where RAM is memory in MB and HDS is drive space in GB for the largest single drive or array in the system.

With that in mind, if you have 128M of RAM, then you will be looking at (128-30)*2 or roughly 200GB drive. Likewise if you have 512M of RAM, then you'll be able to accommodate roughly 1TB

In real life however 512M can be perfectly fine with a 2TB array and 128 may fail on a 160G if you have the right type of files. Generally speaking however, for single drives 500G or more, 256M should be sufficient and a minimum.

Hope that helps.

Yup! This is what I needed.

Just need to start looking for 1GB vulture deals I guess - since I suspect your boxes will be fitted with 4 X 2TB drives soon :)

Just as a data point... I have run 4 250 gigs drives with only 128 mb with no problems. All 4 four drives were at 99% with ~4.5 gig files.

Your mileage may vary...

Exactly what we had "before the problems". And this 128MB box worked perfectly with 4ea 500GB drives as an NAS - until I forced the chkdsk.
