Okay, bought and downloaded HDD the other day. Burnt onto a CD last night and tried to install on my server - without success. In my naivete I assumed (dangerous, I know) that I would be able to install it onto an R1 drive on my 3Ware 8500-12 card - however the installer just says that there are no suitable devices available and shuts down.

Is this something I should persevere with, or will the installer not install to a hardware RAID drive?

Not the end of the world either way, I was considering building a secondary "baby" NAS for critical data.

Can you not install it on either an old small hard drive, a laptop hard drive or as i'm planning on doing a CF card with a CF>IDE adaptor. Then your data is confined to the RAID drives with the OS separate.

I already have USB on a CF card in a CF to IDE adapter plugged straight onto the motherboard. I was trying to achieve a slight tidy up of the case, reduction in power consumption and the ability to disable the onboard IDE controller to free up IRQ's as I have been having issues with them.

That said, USB is rock solid just now, I just wanted a neater solution.

Just as a matter of interest, how many hard drives are you using and with what size/make of power supply?
I'm going to be using an LSI Megaraid 8 port SATA card and am initially going to use 5x500gig HDD's (i've got an additional one as a spare) but only have a 380watt TAGAN PSU. Think this will be enough?

I've got 2 x 250GB; 8 x 500GB HDD's: 4 x PATA, 6 x SATA. I'm using an Antec 650W triple 12V rail PSU. I use http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp to estimate, based on the worst case scenario and then purchase a PSU which will handle that 24/7. Your Tagan is not a cheap PSU, so it should be able to handle that load - I had 6 x HDD hanging off a Dell server 450W psu for a while. I would strongly suggest that you check out the calculator though. Some say that it overestimates, but I would rather not have a crash if everything was being used at once.

Cheers NickC
Came out at 231 watts, so i feel a bit happier. I've already swapped my old Enermax 300 watt into my existng 3 disk non raid setup, so i'm just about ready to go. Just need a free afternoon to get it all up and running.

Any more luck getting your setup to work?

Hi Nick,

The current installer does not support installation to a RAID array since our original intent has been to dedicate the RAID storage for data. We'll take a closer look at that over the next few weeks. Modifications to the installer will be necessary as well as some evaluation of it's current limits. Installing NASLite-2 HDD on a 3TB partition, for example, is currently not possible, The installer can address 2TB max.

Anyway, I'll add it to the list.

Tony,

Many thanks for the prompt response - I would be delighted if this could be achieved. The RAID1 in question is a 250GB drive (why not protect the NASLite installation the same way I protect my important data?). I'll patiently await the release of the revised version with the modified installer.

Thanks again.

Nick.
