 Post subject: New Setup - Slow Speed?

I got my NAS configured late Friday night with my new RAID 5 configuration. I'm getting abouty 16-17mb/sec from my PC to my NAS and about 20-25 mb/sec from the NAS to my PC. This seems sort of slow? The single drive I had in there before the Raid was actually getting a little better performance? I was doing this via a windows file share. This was over the gigabit LAN.

Hardware:

4x400gb Western Digital 400GB Sata 150gb Hard Drives
3ware 8506 PCI Raid Controller

Any help is appreciated.

I'm getting similiar numbers on my setup.. I was hoping for a higher throughput but was unable to identify the bottleneck. Try to transfer via FTP instead of SMB (windows fileshare).

Not much better with FTP. Here is my log file. It appears my Raid Controller is running at 33mhz? Is this the cause?

The 32bit PCI-bus operates at 33MHz so thats normal (64bit PCI is not very common on consumer-grade hardware). 33MHz will give you a theoretical throughput of 133MB/s but thats for the entire bus shared with all PCI devices. I'll let Tony or Ralph comment as to what could be causing your "low" numbers..

The speed seems to be ok for raid5. The difference in R vs W may be the crappy rtl chip in your NIC. Those things do well on some boards and totally crap all over themselves in others. Don't know if it's a BIOS, bus, or whatever related, but people do complain about rtl. Not a scientific answer, but it's all i've got. :)

I have the Netgear GA311 in the server.

I ordered a Intel, 82540EM chipset, from fleebay. I'll post my findings. I hope this is indeed the issue.

You can try different PCI slots as well as BIOS tweaks to free up some IRQs. Looking at the syslog, nothing jumps out, but at times certain combinations tend to perform poorly compared to others. In many cases simply moving the peripherals to different slots and resetting the BIOS does the job.

I installed a new Intel Pro/1000 MT card. I ran some checks and started having errors writing and reading. The speed seemed really good for a second, then write and read errors. I put the old card back in and it's slow, of course, but I dont' get errors. Any ideas? Here is the log when I had the intel card installed. Is this a bad card?

I also tried the old Netgear card in a different slot. it didn't seem to make a difference for speed.

ACPI is disabled in the BIOS. I've tried different BIOS configs and different PCI slots with the new card. These are the type of errors I get when running diskwriggler. Speeds look much better if I didn't have read and write errors :)

Well maybe I spoke too quickly on ACPI. I have three options in the BIOS.

S1
S1&S3
S3

Inside those options I can enable and disable features for Lan, PCI, WOR, USB, and Power on. I have tried various combinations of S1, S1/S3, S3 with these options enabled and disabled. Any thoughts? Can it be disabled at the NAS level?

Any ideas? I ordered a BCM5705 card to see if it would make a difference. I do have another motherboard and CPU. Should I try it?

I noticed that when I do ftp it's super fast. when I do windows file sharing I get fast reads, but slow writes? Any ideas?
