Hello,

Just got NASLITE 2 CDD and installed it, replacing my NASLITE V1 NAS. All goes pretty well except for when I add the CMD IDE card. Indeed, when I add the 250 GB Maxtor to it, start the server, it apparently first sees it as 30 GB. Then when I get to the NASLITE 2 login screen, it gives me:

/etc/ServerElements/bin/NL2-0B: 265 : Syntax error : 100-194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0032 000 253 000 Old_age Always Failing_now38

And I get 3 consecutive 700MHz bips every 30 seconds or so...

Any idea? Could this be IRQ errors?

Thanks

Nic

Hm :?

Something is strange about the way the drive handles SMART. I haven't seen this before. From the admin interface, turn SMART off for that drive. That should hopefully resolve the problem. Also, if someone else can identify the same behavior, please speak up.

Ok I will try but I think you NASLITE 2 and SMART are not to blame.

You see, when I power up the PC (DELL XPS 450- PIII - 576MB RAM), I first get the BIOS screen with the DELL logo, followed by the CMD Bios that scans for any IDE drives. The scan finds the Maxtor drive, but it sees it as a 30,700 MB drive, instead of a 250,000MB drive...

Then NASLITE 2 kicks in, runs all the checks, finds disks 0, 1, 2 and 3 (the Maxtor Drive) and just before it prompts me for the Admin login, it gives that message detailed in my first post accompanied by the beeps.

When I check the hardware status in the HTML pages from another PC, I see only drives 0,1 and 2. Drive 3 is not available.

So I am thinking that this may come from a conflict between the DMD IDE controller and the motherboard...

I tried replacing the Maxtor with other drives and I get the same issue...

Could the card conflict due to ATA133 and ATA100 conflicts?

Thoughts?

If you have not formatted and set the drive for data, then it will not appear in the status. Only drives available for storage are monitored. You can check the syslog for possible IRQ conflicts but I doubt that's the problem. Usually, IRQ issues will prevent hardware from being detected or prevent hardware from performing optimally. In your case that's not what's happening.

Some drives have a jumper that forces 32M max size for backward compatibility with win98, etc. Can you verify the drive is jumpered properly for full capacity? Turn SMART for that dive off in the amin as I suggested above, format it, reboot and see where you stand.

I will test this when I get back home this evening. I can already answer some of these questions.

All drives have been functioning correctly and flawlessly under NASLITE SMB (diskette). What I am conducting here is an upgrade. Since i have to add the CD-ROM drive to boot on the MOBO, I need to put one of the HDD on the added CMD PCI to IDE controller. BTW, this Maxtor drive is full so reformatting does not really please me :( I'll use on of the 80 GB drives.

I'll keep you posted.

If that does not work, I'll try putting the CD-ROM drive on the CMD controller and make the Bios boot from it.

Thanks

Nic

Ah, so the 250G is not a new drive. I didn't consider that when I suggested reformatting. Yes, puting the CD on the secondary controller would be the smart thing to do since it is needed only during boot.

Alright... I tried to put the CD ROM on the CMD card and the server would not boot. Checked the jumpers on the Maxtor 250 GB and there is no possible setting for limiting to 30 MB so that was it... the only setting were Slave, Master and Cable Detect...

So I decided to look for my only ATA IV drive (one of the two 80 GB) and place it on the card and this time during the scanning of the drives by the card, it found that the drive was indeed around 80 GB...

Then Naslite 2 kicked in... and ... and ... hold your breath... it gave me the same SMART message and the 3 consecutive beeps :(

Bummer.

So I did what you suggested and in fact, it looked like the beeps were coming from the capacity alarm... so I switched it to Off on the Drive 3 but now, my HTML pages do not provide SMART at all for any drives (HDD, SYSTEM and Network pages are 404)... :(

I checked again the list of compatible hardware and the 0649 chipset is indeed listed... Am I the only one with this problem?

OK, so you have the CD and 3 drives on the MB and an additional 80G on the CMD card. All are properly detected and rendered by NASLite, but you are getting beeps. Did you take a look at the manual and identify for sure what is causing the beeps. There is a table listing the meaning of all alarm sequences. Guessing really doesn't help in determining a cause.

If it was a capacity alarm, then it would sound for that drive no matter where it is connected. Capacity alarms are strictly contend driven. As far as SMART, disabling SMART for a given drive does not remove the SMART status for all drives and you should under no circumstances get a 404. That would mean there is a hardware problem and the stats probe could not complete it's task.

Anyway, let's get some facts first. Place the SMART setting back the way it was, save and reboot. After you get the beeps, check the manual and identify what they are. If they are SMART related, then take a look at the smart details for the drive in question. Lastly, post the syslog and any other pertinent info here so we can look at this intelligently.

Thanks Tony,

Your patience is appreciated. I will perform you suggested changes this pm when I get back home. Until then I can already give you some facts/confirmation. No need to respond yet as we can wait for this evening's tweaks.

Fact 1: NAsLite 2 main functionality works:
At this stage, I can access the server's shared drives through my network's PCs... I have a Windows XP Media Center PC which managed to "see" all the shared drives in the following order:
Disk-0
Disk-1
Disk-2
Disk-3
Remote
Shares
Status

Fact 2: 3 beeps were indeed capacity alarm related.
As described, the beeps were the 3 consecutive 700MHz related to drives being maxed out on capacity. What the manual does not say is that the sounds (in this case the 3x700MHz beeps) are repeated on regular intervals (which is what I did not understand). Since almost all my drives (except for the 400 GB) are full, I have disabled the alarm for all drives (the server is in the basement and roachs don't care about drives being full :)
I performed this action through the General Storage Option Menu...

Fact 3: Just to confirm the hardware setup
MOBO IDE Primary Master: CD Drive (with Naslite2 CDD)
MOBO IDE Primary Slave: Maxtor 250 GB (that one is full)
MOBO IDE Secondary Master: Seagate 400 GB (lots of space left in this one)
MOBO IDE Secondary Slave: WD Caviar 80 GB (that one is full)
Card IDE Primary Master: Seagate 80 GB (that one is full)

Fact 4: SMART is ON For ALL Drives.
when I played with the server settings yesterday, I switched off the SMART for drive-3 as you suggested and then I realized that the HTML pages for HDD, SYSTEM and Network pages were 404... so I decided to reactivate SMART on that drive again. I saved the configuration (option 9) and rebooted. Still no HTML Pages.

As I said, no need to respond yet... I will make review all my settings, from network setup to HDD. I will also remove the CMD card and its attached drive from the configuration and see if I can get the probe to do its job, and therefore generate those valuable HTML reports.

More to come

Thanks

Nic

That puts things in a bit better perspective. ;)

I assume you are running 2.06. I'd suggest you leave things alone as you have them and check to see if the syslog page is available. If so, copy it's contents and post it here.

Alright... did not touched at the hardware configuration... here's the syslog

Correction this morning: I lied  I did move the hardware around before generating this syslog and I left traces of my wrong doings by swapping the primary IDE and Secondary IDE... And it's a Samsung drive next to the Maxtor... not a Seagate.. The WD is a Seagate in fact... that's what happens when you think you know but you don't Apologies to the forum readers and helpers.

The problem stays the same though... no SMART.

Well, I have to say that unless I'm missing something, everything appears to be normal and you should have a healthy system. Here are the problems that I'll assume remain:

1. With SMART enabled, you get the Syntax Error at boot.
2. With SMART disabled, you are missing status pages.

I'm puzzled by both cases since there is no obvious reason that will cause such behavior. None I can think of anyway. What is the exact model of theCMD649 controller and does it have a BIOS you can manipulate at boot time. Also, with SMART enabled, can you access the Disk-X page for the drive on the CMD controller and if so, can you identify any abnormalities in the SMART details. :?

Well SMART isn't working (ie: the status HTML pages on HDD, Network and system are 404) at all with the CMD card even if I set:
- Drives 0, 1, 2 with SMART and drive 3 without
- All drives with SMART

The last time SMART worked (ie: the 3 above mentioned pages existed) was when the CMD card was not hooked to the MOBO.

As for accessing the Bios of the card, I never really tried to enter it, to tell you the truth... When the PC starts and I have passed the Dell bios logo, I get to the Card screen where the IDE scan is initiated (see previous posts on this thread). On that screen, I have a the possibility to "Press F1 or F11 for Windows 2000" (which I have tried without ever changing the outcome). I never really understood what that was for or did. I had this card running very well on Windows XP Pro for a few years and never had to do anything...

I'll get you the exact name of the card but the chipset says CMD-0649 alright.

I'll reboot again and try pressing the classic keys for accessing BIOSes (Esc, F8, Del, etc) and see if I can access some bios menu...

More to come on the CMD saga.

Ok... something new happened yesterday after the Nth reboot. The HDD page came up but showed only the System line report. the HDD lines are still not available. I guess we're getting somewhere but since I don't know what triggered that...

The brand of the CMD0649 card is "Butterfly"... never heard of them and this is not a joke. The logo is a small yellow butterfly that looks more like Patrick the Starfish painted in yellow, if you ask me.

Also, I get the message
/etc/ServerElements/bin/NL2-0B: 265 : Syntax error : 100-194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0032 000 253 000 Old_age Always Failing_now38
with or without SMART turned on for all or any drive... in fact, whatever I do... I get this message. It goes away when the controller is removed from the MOBO.

I went in the admin interface (telnet) and also went in the tools and utilities and realized that all the network reports and tools were actually up and running. So could it be that the sofware that generates the lost HTML pages be simply hung up on something? That SMART is actually performing alright... it's just that the pages are not generated? :?

Looks like things are degenerating with time. I lost drive 3 (the one on the CMD). Did a rebbot... still not there... Saw in the telnet console that the drive was still there but not mounted.

After running a disk check and repair, and restarting it, I managed to get it back.

But then I wanted to see if I could get back the SMART HTML Pages so I shutdown the server, removed the drive and CMD card. Rebooted and the HTML pages were still not there. :(

So I shut down, put back the card and drive 3 is gone again (not mounted). Running another one of these disk check... It's clearing out a ton of illegal blocks...

I am starting to think that I should move back to Naslite 1...

Edited: got drive 3 back weew :o
