well I think I've cracked the mounting and permissions by groping my way around Ubunto fstab and chmod ; all worked today, apparently; we'll see what a reboot tomorrow brings!

Now (!) why if my remote linux file says in 'properties' that it is 100 GB, why does NL think it is only 8 GB or so, confirmed when my backup 'ran out of disk space'. I've only just used MAKDIR to create it and it sits in a partition on a 200 GB empty disk???

Can someone out there elucidate, please? Many thanks Jeff-john

Because the "Remote" is a virtual share that provides access to one or more shares of one or more remote servers, both RO and RW, all attached to the NASLite-2 root filesystem which happens to be 8M.

thanks for the reply, Tony, BUT does this mean I can never backup my (large) system files to my remote server, using Naslite?? Jeff

I wanted to use it as a depository for archive and disk images.

If the backup software you use does not think it's smarter than you and refuse to save to the remote shares simply because it reports a low value, then you have to use it against the physical disk shares. Are you using Vista? Because vista clearly has brain damage in that respect. 8)

Also (if it allows) try specifying absolute (and direct) path (like "\\192.168.1.x\Shares\Disk-0\Backup"), rather than a mapped network drive (with a disk drive letter).

Many thanks George and Dimension. Using Ghost 10 and also Drive Backup 8.5 I browsed to the remote directory "Storage". (not a referenced 'letter' drive X,Y,Z etc). They each warned me that there was insufficient space on that drive. Ignoring the message results in a failure after some minutes. Is there an application that would plug-on, or is that logically not possible? Thanks again, Jeff

well I have achieved my backup with 30GB in about 90 mins to the Remote hosted Directory. I used a physical drive as a dump and copy/pasted to the Remote storage. All worked well and fast enough! seems rather circuitous route but at least it works.

Thanks for the support guys! Silver-surfer Jeffjohn

I find that if you pay the price, you might just get what you want! Acronis (20-day trial)will back up files and disk images without a problem to the NL 30 GB , in my case. The Shares transfer to the Remote works but takes about 3 times longer. 3 hrs.

I didn't find other backup s/ware to work to the network in my limited assessment.

When you are writing to a remote share you are using the network to go from the client to the Naslite server and then again from the Naslite server to the remote storage host. Add latency to that and you have the answer for the 3X. :)
