Hi guys.. me again.. I have an installation with 6 HDD.. 2 SATA 4 IDE.. yesterday when i came in i got some Kernel Errors.. rebooted system let it go.. when i came in today 3 of the disks failed to mount so i went into the disk adminster page tried to do a check and repair.. half way thru the disk check i got an error: kernel BUG at page_alloc.c:144! invallid operand: 0000 the process was SMBD which in my limited understanding of linux thats samba? it continued on its merry way.. having said that i was moving some files from 2 of the disks that were mounted still and the transfer crashed.. are these two errors related? i really need to get one of these disks mounted as it contains all of my business files and i cant do anything until they are back up.. any suggestions?

PS: Samba is now not working.. so I assume it was the transfer that caused the error? is there anyway to restart samba without rebooting the system?

Can you post a syslog for review? Let the machine run for a few minutes after it generates the kernel errors and then refresh and post the syslog.

My immediate guess is RAM or heat but that's just a guess. :wink:

I would if i knew how to do that.. it is running a Cel 2.5 with the standard heatsink and fan which is running at all times.. as for ram i have 512 Mb of DDR the NAS system seems to crash whenever i try and copy large amounts of data.. this time i was moving 35Gb from one machine to the NAS disk 2 which on reboot failed during booting.. all of the drives are seagate barracuda 120's there seems to be no rhymne between if it is SATA or EIDE.. This is getting rather tiresome making me regret my purchase of this operating system..

ok crashed during diskcheck.. and on reboot my unlock code failed.. this is getting weird..

Try turning ACPI off in the BIOS and try again. Also make sure the NIC and drive controllers use unique IRQs.

You can fetch the syslog from the status screens.

There is no option to turn off the ACPI.. only S1 and S3.. it was on S1 switched it to S3.. is that it?

I think it's a RAM issue. Try different RAM and avoid using multiple sticks if not of the same type.

I've just changed the stick to a 1GB stick of DDR 400.. its been crashing a lot over the weekend so i'll see what happens now :S
