Hi all...I am new to NASlite and am looking for some help...on one of my disks in the syslog I am getting the following error and am not sure what it is meaning or if I can ignore it...

Quote:
SMART Error Log Version: 1
ATA Error Count: 8 (device log contains only the most recent five errors)
CR = Command Register [HEX]
FR = Features Register [HEX]
SC = Sector Count Register [HEX]
SN = Sector Number Register [HEX]
CL = Cylinder Low Register [HEX]
CH = Cylinder High Register [HEX]
DH = Device/Head Register [HEX]
DC = Device Command Register [HEX]
ER = Error register [HEX]
ST = Status register [HEX]
Powered_Up_Time is measured from power on, and printed as
DDd+hh:mm:SS.sss where DD=days, hh=hours, mm=minutes,
SS=sec, and sss=millisec. It "wraps" after 49.710 days.

Error 8 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 3747 hours (156 days + 3 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle.

After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
-- -- -- -- -- -- --
40 51 80 6f 39 3d e0 Error: UNC 128 sectors at LBA = 0x003d396f = 4012399

Commands leading to the command that caused the error were:
CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Powered_Up_Time Command/Feature_Name
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ---------------- --------------------
25 03 80 6f 39 3d 1e 00 4d+09:31:46.616 READ DMA EXT
25 03 01 00 00 00 00 00 4d+09:31:46.590 READ DMA EXT
24 03 01 af ea 42 25 00 4d+09:31:46.589 READ SECTOR(S) EXT
c6 03 10 af ea 42 00 00 4d+09:31:46.589 SET MULTIPLE MODE
91 03 3f af ea 42 0f 00 4d+09:31:46.589 INITIALIZE DEVICE PARAMETERS [OBS-6]

I have received this error multiple times for this drive...

any help would be much appreciated or links to where I can find info on the syslog errors...

Thanks

Hello tofin:

I am not an expert in this area ... but since you have no response so far, I'll try to help.

1] The log indicates this error occurred at lifetime of 3747 hours. First question that comes to mind is, what is the current number of hours ? In other words, did this error that was placed in the log occur very recently or not ? I have had some disks with errors in the log that are very old and have not had troubles in many, many hours. As a matter of fact, on one disk I was unaware of any erros until I started using those older WinXP drives in my NASLite system and saw the SMART log. The HDD continued to work fine (but I don't trust critical data to it).

2] I do not know what "Error 8" is. A search on the manufacturer's site might help.

3] run a complete SMART test (in the Disk Configuration admin menu), but be prepared that it may take a very long time (hours) depending on the size of the disk.

4] give us some more info: HDD size, Mfg, Model, production date (you might have to pull the drive out to look at the label) ... this is optional if too much of a hassle. Is the drive running quiet ? What was it used for before ? Did you buy it new or refurbished ?

5] Remember this is a log of previous errors. A complete posting of the entire DiskLog might be helpful.

6] Are there any complaints in the SysLog ?

:) Georg
