I have setup a new NASLite Server from a Gigabyte GA-8KNXP MB P4 2.4gig HT with 2gig RAM. I started out with a small WD 40GIG IDE drive for testing. With onboard giga lan it would xfer files between 25 and 31MB sec from a Vista machine that also has gig lan.

Then I ordered 2 500gig Maxtor SATA HD from tiger direct. Plugged them into the Intel ICH5 SATA ports and have CD-ROM and 40gig IDE on IDE 0.

Nothing but very slow performance. Xfers via SMB start out about 16meg sec and slow way down to 1mb or less.

I have read through the various forums and see others with large (>400gig) SATA drives having problems.

I tried various recommendations like turning off SMART. BIOS default is to map SATA 0/1 to unused IDE so in my case they map to Secondary IDE Master/Slave. I tried other BIOS option of native SATA port 0 and 1 and have the same results. Also when STA drive are plugged in even the 40gig IDE drive has slow xfers.

I read a posting where someone mentioned HD jumpers. I check the Maxtor units and they have a jumper setting to force SATA 150mb mode vice 300. Since the GA-8KNXP is an older MB with SATA 1 support I tried the jumper. Same results, Nothing seems to work. I really want to get this up and running. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if you show the complete SysLog ... I think you do, but notice there's not a single mention of "ICH5".

I too had a very strange problem with SATA drives ... take a look at http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1677&highlight=ICH5&.

Notice my BAD SysLog (green) does not mention ICH5 either (or SATA for that matter). But the blue "correct" SysLog listing DOES.

Read all the way to the bottom and see if your BIOS has additional (non-sensical) options that could fix this.

And report back with any progress ... hope this helps.

Thanks for the link. I read that and have similar options in the BIOS except for SATA I only have NONE, AUTO, MANUAL, I tried manual and mapping the 2 SATA ports to SATA0 and SATA1. Same results with really slow xfer rates. Other manual option is to map SATA ports to either IDE PRI or IDE SEC which ends the same as AUTO mode.

I think I will try just the SATA drives without the IDE 40gig attached and then try the two Silicone Image SATA Ports to see if NASLite works any better than the 2 Intel ports. Below is the log:

More testing completed.

When I disconnect the two SATA drives and test NASLite-2 with just a IDE 40gig. I get 24-26mb xfer. I watched task manager in Windows while xfer was running. Clicked on Network Tab to see graph of Network data during test. When it is just the IDE drive connected I see steady network graph, when either or both of the SATA drives are connected the network usage goes through a cycle of burst of activity and then nothing for about 30 seconds then it repeats this cycle in steady increments. Overall xfer speed is really slow compare to just IDE drive.

I have screen captures that illustrate this if I can get them uploaded somewhere and BLOCKED_WORD for the forlum.

The problem is definitely SATA drive related. I have a smaller 160 SATA drive I will try and then I will try the Sil SATA ports to see if NASLite2 treats them different from the ICH5 Intel ones.

Well the Sil 3112 SATA ports exhibit the same problem as the Intel SATA ports. Erratic xfers and overall slow network performance.

Will try smaller SATA drives tommorrow and then I am stuck again.

System works fine with no SATA drives connected. I am trying to shuffle some data around to free up a 160gig SATA from another machine for testing to rule out size of HD.

Hate to even mention this but I kicked FreenAS around as well when evaluating NAS software. I specifically went with NASLite2 based on forum posting of maturity/speed/supportability.

Now the bad part. Just performed a test with FreeNAS with same two 500GIG SATA drives on same hardware and get nice smooth fast file xfers. 30-32mb sec and smooth task Manager graph of network speed. I know this is not really a scientific comparison of xfer speeds but It does seem to point towards a NASLite2 problem with this particular MB/SATA/HD setup.

I really like this Gigabyte MB GA-8KNXP MB because it has 4 IDE controllers for 8 total IDE drives supported plus 4 SATA ports for a total of 12! This seems to be the perfect large expandable NAS MB.

I started out with 2 large 500gig SATA HD but have yet to get them working well enough for any use beyond testing/trouble shooting. I hate to give up on SATA drives and switch to IDE just make NASLite work.

Anybody have any suggestions?

If it's any consolation ... I just looked at doing a complete SMART on my pair of Seagate 400GB HDD. This is the same setup which originally gave me the slow mirror experience (my http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1677 post ) until a (very unusual) BIOS setting fixed that. And although I have been happily using this secondary server as a mirror ... I now have a different & new issue. The complete SMART will not run, even though SMART is available and enabled. The normal short SMART says it "PASSED" (every 10 minutes, which is my interval). However, upon closer inspection two hints stand out: in Disk-0 Status page is says "Not in smartctl database", and when asking for the full SMART test in Disk-0 Configuration menu, although it accepts the "Y" response, it says "Extended Background Self Test has begun Please wait 0 minutes for test to complete. Estimated completion time: <the date/time shown here is the CURRENT time>".

Conclusion: we need Tony and/or Ralph in on this.

QUESTION: is the next version (2.05) going to use the Linux 2.6 kernel which might fix this ?

QUESTION: is there a way to get rid of the "Not in smartctl database" by adding something simple ?

QUESTION: is this in any way related to the "Sata drive is showing but I cannot format it" posting ?

The above usually indicates hardware problems. In your case it's likely a misconfiguration. Possible causes can be IRQ problems or SATA cables on SATAII drive/interface as well as a number of other possibilities.

The first thing I'll try is make sure the drives are set to SATA (1.5G mode), second turn off all unnecessary items in the BIOS including USB (since you are using the CDD version).

If you are using multiple SATA controllers, try with one first.

The first thing you should target is eliminating the "DriveStatusError" messages in the syslog.

AGAIN, remember my initial trouble with the slow mirroring. Then I changed the BIOS and everything was fine. But (as I found today) the full SMART won't run, except to say "Please wait 0 minutes for test to complete." (note the 0 minutes).

Remember, in either case the Server Storage Disk-X reports "Not in smartctl database". Also, there are NO errors (status, seek or otherwise) on these drives in the SysLog.

I just started the full SMART, and will try to time it to completion to see how close to the 179 minutes it actually is (if I don't go to bed first).

NOTE: I had to answer TWICE with "Y" to the same question "Do you wish to allow ... to complete ?" ( after a "Y" before that to the previous question. I don't recall in the case of the green listing ... but I think it only asked me ONCE ... )

That has shown once for each drive every time. I thought it might be SMART related and so I turned off SMART in NASLite for all drives but no change. The shows up for the IDE 40gig hda as well as both SATA drives when connected. I have both SATA drives set with "force 150 mode" jumpers enabled since MB is SATA I only. MB is 2003 vintage and was previously used as a MS Media Center PC with 4 SATA drives. Decided to make it a NAS machine based on the number of HDs it supports. Also tried just the INTEL ICH5 SATA Ports and then diabled them and tried the Sil 3112 ports. Same exact symptoms.

Will try again with USB disabled. I already had the audio, serial and LPT ports turned off in BIOS. MB has latest BIOS from Gigabyte. When SATA drives are not connected NASLite works good with just the 40gig connected as IDE0 Pri and CD-ROM IDE0 Sec. Add the SATA drives and networking xfers go south.

Will also try an older smaller SATA I 160gig HD by itself. But I have to backup the data on it somewhere for now so i can format it for NASLite. I might just try it connected without formating it to see if it messes with xfers speeds to teh 40gig IDE and see if Log errors are still present.[/quote]

Tony,
Here is the log with everything on the MB BIOS disabled except onboard LAN and IDE PRI for CD-ROM and 40gig IDE. Still have the one time drive error but see no problem and have nice smooth fast xfer to 40gig. SATAs are unplugged.

Is there any other debuging that I can do? I might try other Linux distros to test.

Tony is your expert here ... but I had a thought. Do you have a PCI NIC ? If yes, turn OFF onboard LAN and try again.

Unlikely ... but worth a try. Looks like this is an Intel 875 chipset, plus Intel Southbridge, so I would not suspect that the gigabit LAN while using ICH5 SATA could be a real problem. But just in case ... What exact Mobo Revision do you have (1.x, 2.x, Ultra, etc) ? What are you using for graphics ?

And, yes, trying another Linux distro is definitely a good debugging step.

No I do not have another PCI Gig NIC to use. I have some older 10/100 Dlinks PCI cards.
MB is GA-8KNXP Rev 2

Latest BIOS version FK. Nvidia 6200 AGP. I have 2gig of RAM Dual Channel. P4 2.4gig HT

Probably way overkill specs for a simple NASLite Box but I had it sitting around unused and bought the 2 500gig SATA for 150.00 each so should have ben a 300 dollar investment + NASLite2 for close to 1TB NAS server with room for more HDs later.

Have to find another PCI GIG NIC to test. Any suggestions for a known compatible model with NASLite2?

Bad thing is that this same seup works great under FreeNAS. I guess that is the difference in underlying OS of FreeBSD vs Linux with regards as to how they use the hardware. I still want to stick with NASLite2. Will try and test under other Linux distros as well as FreeBSD and what ever else I can get free to test.

Update:

Just tried a older SATA I 160gig HD. First test was using SATA BIOS option set to Auto. It maps SATA to IDE1 Pri. Xfer speed really slow 3-4mb. ughhhh.

Next BIOS Option of Manual and set SATA to SATA0 option. Now we are cooking. 38mbsec to the 160 drive!!!! 32mb to the IDE drive.

Conclusions so far: I am hosed on larger SATA II HD even with force 150 mode jumper on. Looks like NasLite likes multiple smaller SATA I drives.

Interesting googling for "libata version 1.20 SATA problem" See all kinds of refs to ICH5, 2.4.x.x versions of kenel. poor performance

So it appears my problems might be related to kernel version and libata version 1.20. and support for larger SATA drives.

Any chance for future NASLite kernel verson and libata version upgrades?

May have to rethink using this MB and NasLite together.

Appreciate your diligence in this ... hopefully we will see kernel 2.6 in NASLite at some point soon. Funny though how my mobo (Supermicro) works fine on ICH5 with the proper (but unexpected) BIOS setting ... but thanks for the additional research.

(Mine are 400GB SATA II Seagates with the factory installed force-150 jumper ... I have not tried removing the jumper ... why mess with a good thing ?)
