I tried Freenas the other day! I quite liked it and it was very easy to setup and use. Now I don't intend to ramble on about the two products and the pros and cons or the differences in quality or support or cost or concept or whatever. But ...

Of all the features and differences that I noticed that are different from NasLite, the one I'm bothering to write about, is the remarkable simplicity of the Freenas setup. I've used Naslite for a few years, and over those years on these forums, I've seen countless postings about which version (USB or CD), about switching between versions, about (the one day) forthcoming HDD version. We even have 2 separate forums - for USB and CD - which are surely basically about the same product.

Freenas has a setup question - where do you want to run it from?; the choices are clear and easy to understand - I happened to choose hard drive and off it goes making a small partition on the disk I selected and makes the rest of the disk available for data. It was easy.

I'm not switching - I continue to use NasLite for my main data storage. But oh, why on earth not learn something from the user friendly, flexible and hassle free setup process it has. Just imagine how quiet the forums here will be without all the anguish about buying the USB version when the user isn't sure their PC will boot from it.

Just a thought.

Thanks

- Chris

I don't know dude, sounds like FR**NAS is moving away from that according to http://freenas.blogspot.com/2007/05/new ... -mode.html so the jury may still be out.

Now I need to fix all bugs that I've added with these changes (I've just found that firmware upgrade doesn't work with the 'embedded' for example).

Really instills confidence in your users, but there is one thing to be learned from it's forums ; it's a buggy, slow piece of crap that far too many people are having problems with. I know this from a personal point of view after a software raid setup with it died and was unrecoverable. The author's answer, opps!

Take a look at thier forums and tell me what a stupid statement this is.

Cool down guys.

He was just saying that if this feature was added to NASlite, then the NASlite forums would be much quieter. He is just bringing an idea forward.

He never said that FR**NAS forums were quiet or that the particular product is bug free or that the users are all happy.

Having said that, I have to say that I can see that some people would like such a feature.

In my case I still believe that NASlite setup is as simple as it could be.

The only thing I like about Fr**NAS over NASlite is the user account feature. All NAS products should have this feature, its pretty basic and important IMO.

Oh, I think I've gone and done it the wrong way round. I think I needed the USB version and I bought the CD version.

Anyone want to trade?

I hate that there's no way to know in advance of spending money if its going to work out the way you hope. A 30-day trial would have saved me a LOT of install aggrevation.

Wouldn't this be illegal?

Hmmm. Good question. I know that you can sell a CD as long as you don't keep a copy. I thought I could sell my MS office CD as long as I don't use it to upgrade and don't keep a copy.

Anyone know if we can sell the license to use NASLite (legally)?

Darren.
