Ok not making this easy as i am using a Mac, and i only been using a MAc for 6days myself!

But i get to step 7 of install guide and try to access nasbox from http://192.168.9.9 (ip i setup in naslite) and for hours still no joy, still i get not found etc etc. People mention Telnet but no idea if thats possible on Mac OS?

I checked everything i can, i had mac and XP talking fine via same cable just hours ago, so sure cable etc is ok? in the startup of Nasbox the network device shows as eth0 on 192.............. and says done/ok so i assumed its talking to my ethernet controller ok?

I tried ping from tools menu but again nothing! it usually says "network not reachable" ? so i assume somewhere my network between MAc and NAsbox isnt good, but i cant figure it out. just hours after buying Naslite i am already close to giving up! 5hrs sat here and nothing.

Before its suggested i do not have another pc to try, my only pc is now the Nasbox! my main computer is now my new Mac.

What am i misisng here? is my ethernet controller not compatablile or something? i couldnt find it in list, but figured the "network device Done" line showed it ok?

Please help i am close to giving up after just few hours, sorry i know doesnt help having a Mac as i am familiar with telnet and ipconfig on PC but all new on this.

Hello professor,

Here are a few things to check and consider:

1. Do you have multiple network cards on the NASLite machine?
2. Is the netmask properly set and the same as on the MAC pc?
3. Is the NASLite IP in the same subnet as the MAC per your netmask?
4. Does the NASLite NIC negotiate half/full duplex to match the MAC pc?
5. Can you ping the MAC from the NASlite PC?
6. If you have a router/gateway on the same network, can you ping it?

The above should be a good start. We'll figure it out ;-)

Only one network card on Nasbox. "marvell chipset" Asus A8V MB

Netmask, not totally convienced what it means but the mac is 255.255.255.0 as is the nasbox?

Subnet, again no expert on networks, but mac is 192.168.0.2 and i set the nasbox as 192.168.9.9 ?

Sorry youve lost me now with NIC ??

No as i say Ping, just brings ups error of "sendto ping: network not reachable"

I have a broadband router WiFi for interenet but i had set it up in this network? this was purely Mac and nasbox BLOCKED_WORD by ethernet cable?
--------------------

My only thought last night was do i have to tell the mac to use the ethernet somehow? sounds silly but its usual connection is WiFi to router, and when i try Http://192.168.9.9 will it not try and find that address via the router as usual ? How does it know to look down the cable alos?
There thats just proved my noob-ness to networking!

Really starting to think i am out my depth here, Subnets / NIC / Gateways, only really guessing what half that means :?

Yeah that would help as they are currently not even on the same subnet. The networking info you listed seem to be corresponding to your WiFi adapter? If you have not already done so, try disabling the WiFi adapter to eliminate the MAC trying to use it to reach the NASLite box. Is the network card enabled?

As for the technical terms, Wikipedia is your friend :)

Subnet - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnetwork
NIC - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_card
Gateway - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway

If your router has a network switch built in to it (multiple LAN ports) as most of them do, you'd probably be better off connecting the NASLite box there, and giving it an ip address in the 192.168.0.x range, although I would prefer to see x being something in the region of 200 rather than 9.

Trying to use an ethernet cable to connect the NASLite box directly to the Mac's ethernet card can be done but introduces a number of other issues -

Network cards are designed to be connected to a hub or switch, rather than directly to one another - a direct connection requires a specially constructed cable known as a crossover cable.

Also - this direct connection would form a dedicated "mini" network which would require you to manually set ip addresses on both the NASLite box and the Mac and in a different ip address range to the one being used on the wireless, for example 192.168.1.x

Thanks for being there for a noob guys, really grateful. Stuck at work right now so cant try it yet. Sounds like subnet numbers was my biggest problem?

The suggestions fordem made seems an excellent idea which i hadnt thought of, yes my router has 4 ethernet entries to it. So it would better to setup Nasbox that Way? And then i assume i would be able access naslite from within Mac as normal with ip address? Would i need any changes in router setup or just plug it in?

Finally i was using a crossover cable last night, but does that mean that direct to router i would need a normal patch cable? as if so i grab one on way home..

thanks again all

Professor...

You should be able to connect Mac and NasLite box via your router without needing to reconfigure, but you'll probably need to use a "straight" cable rather than a crossover.
Good advice from fordem.... IP addressing makes my brain hurt! one slip of the finger and it doesn't work

Good luck
Hugo

Some routers do support MDIX (automatically sense whether or not crossover is required and provide it - in which case your cross over cable would work) and some don't, so, I'd pickup that straight through cable - just to be safe - it's not expensive and it will be one less variable to cause a headache

Thankyou so much chaps, i tried Fordem's suggestion of a patch cable to my router, didnt have to set anything. Changed the subnet to 192.168.0.XXX as suggested. Logged into my browser and lo and behiold there we go! :P :P

<<<<<VERY happy chappy indeed

You guys are great, thanks.
Probably start another topic in a moment about accessing the storage from other PCs on network though..

Gotta love us Noobs eh
