(sorry - I posted this under the hardware section by accident)

I followed the doc (which isn't bad) and configured my NAS box up to the point of setting up the disks. When I saved the configuration, it asked for a floppy (which surprised me since I thought it would store the config on one of the hard disks). After setting the IP address, entering the license, etc., I save the config to a floppy and rebooted it (using the admin menu).

When I rebooted, the Dell logo flashed by (probably part of the BIOS) and then I got a "Starting PC DOS..." message which HUNG (10+ minutes).

Is this coming from the ServerElements image on the floppy or is this some tie over from something else??

In any event, if I pop the floppy out and do a hard cycle, it goes back to the NASLite admin menu, but it has LOST all my settings.

Where do I go from here? I thought NASLite+ saved its configuration on one of the hard disks. Why is there a floppy involved?

HELP! Can anyone tell me if the "DOS" message is coming from the NASLite flpppy?

I have no other floppy drives in my network to even test this floppy on (nor would I know what to look for, since I'm sure it is NOT a standard dos floppy).

TIA

Well, The docs are clear about the fact that NASLite+ saves config data onto a floppy and not on the data storage drives. None of the current NASLite versions save config data to a storage drive.

With that out of the way, the problem you are having is caused by improperly set boot order. In the BIOS, make sure that the PC is set to boot from CD first. That should get you going.

Fantastic. I'm finally newfs'ing disk drives. Sorry the solution was so simple. I googled and scanned the doc. Seems obvious now, but I actually thought it was SUPPOSED to boot off the floppy. Clearly its just using the floppy as a persistent filesystem and the boot still occurs off the CD. Got it.

THANKS.

FYI: here's a suggested improvement...

When formatting disks, it nicely states the IDE bus issues with max 4 disks, etc. I saw all that before I purchased. I also saw that the mount points are pre-named (no big deal for me, some other people were upset by this).

But when I physically installed my (2) 320GB IDE disks, I put them where they were physcially convenient (which turned out to be one on each bus and the 2nd bus already had an optical on it). This resulted in Disk-1 and Disk-4 instead of Disk-1 and Disk-2.

I'm not going back. but it is weird (to say the least) to have a system exporting filesystems that are numbered and to have the numbers not be sequential and contiguous. You should at least call attention to this.

I would have put them both on the first bus so that they showed up as 1 and 2.

Thanks.

This is too sweet. I now have another 580GB of disk and I spent $500.
