Just got NASlite 2 working on an old K6-2 box. All fine but I wondered about memory? I have 64Mb in it and the status page shows it all in use. I have another stick I could throw in there but is that going to help at all, i.e. get it running any better?

From everything I have read in the manuals and the forums you should have at least 128 mb in the PC. In my case with 128 and 4 250 gb drives it shows 97% in use.

64M should be fine. You can disable some of the services you don't use in order to keep things from bogging down, but other than that, 64M can be sufficient. That said, Harvin’s comment is valid since more RAM will result in better performance.

In that case I may as well chuck the full 196Mb I have in there. I can't use it in anything else as it's the old 168 pin DIMM !

OK so what's going on here? Added the 128Mb stick of memory and now have UNLOCK INVALID? Do I have to get another key now and how many times can I do this for a perfectly legal copy which I paid for?

You can generate as many keys as you need.

Actually, the SID generation code in v2.00 and v2.01 really are too sensitive due to the fact that the code observes IRQ assignment. That has proven to be too sensitive.

Next release (v2.02) will correct that condition.

Our apologies to everyone for the inconvenience...

Tony,
OK no problem but out of interest, I didn't chnage any IRQ just the extra memory. Assume this would have kicked off a new key request?

My server has 512MB. Will it use all of this, or does it use only 128MB? I've got another 256MB I could add, if it would provide any benefit.

On many machines ACPI is used for IRQ routing, so in some such cases, the NIC IRQ may change without any physical changes to hardware. This is not true with most boards, but some.

Yes, v2.02 will require a new unlock due to the updates in the SID algorithm.

In theory, based on usage, NASLite will do fine with as little as 64M or a bit less, to as much as approximately 750M. I’d say that the sweet spot is about 128M/256M for most installations however if you have it, you might as well use it.

The rule is that more RAM results in fewer disk reads/writes, but if you have many small files and only a small number of clients, less memory is fine. If you have very large files and more clients, more memory will perform better.

Hope that helps…

This particular machine is intended as a backup server, so won't have many users (usually one), and as for file size, it's usually one HUGE file. I'll keep this in mind for the next one I build, though, assuming I go for NASLite-2. (I'm still waiting to hear if my Promise SATA300 TX2plus controller cards will be supported. If not, then I'm going to change to some other RAID solution.)
