Hello,
I am using NasLite-SMBG, and .../Info/Disk-4.htm tells me the following:
**********************
Disk-4 Initialization Messages

Checking for Disk-4
Disk-4 is not available
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disk-4 Hardware
WDC WD400BB-00FJA0, ATA DISK drive
attached ide-disk driver.
host protected area => 1
78165360 sectors (40021 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=77545/16/63
**********************
BUT,when I want to initialize the disk via Option4, then disk 4, I get the following error message:

Failed to configure Disk-4 (or 3). Can only be configured if it is installed and is a fixed disk...

(BIOS has both IDE's enabled)

Any ideas what's wrong here?

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks, Thorsten Indra

have you rechecked the power and ata-cables?
do you hear the drive spin? (i once had a faulty power cable, so the drive wouldn't spin up good, or stop spinning randomly)

have you checked the jumpers?

(hope those simple steps fix it for you)

Yes, I have checked all hardware connection multiple times, and can feel the drives spinning

Any other ideas out there? I am stuck. :?

Thanks in advance,
Thorsten

Addendum:
After some more back an forth, I have disks 1+2 running, but disk 3 (the master on IDE-1) still keeps acting up. The info now shows the following:
*******************************************
Disk-3 Initialization Messages
Checking for Disk-3
Disk-3 is not available
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disk-3 Hardware
WDC WD400BB-00FJA0, ATA DISK drive
attached ide-disk driver.
host protected area => 1
78165360 sectors (40021 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=77545/16/63

NOTE: Disk-3 is installed and can be configured for use with NASLite-SMBG.
*******************************************
But again, if I choose option 4 in the admin menu and want to configure the disk, I get the failed to configure message again.

Any more ideas anybody?
Thorsten

Hi Thorsten,

In the Info share, there will be a button called "SYS Log". With NASLite on, can you capture the contents and post them so we can take a look at it. That will be a good start i think

Hi Tony,
here a description of the hardware first, the contents of Syslog follows below.
IDE-0 Master: 40GB WD Drive
IDE-0 Slave: CD ROM (but this does not make a difference, whether it is connected or not, the problems persist. Would like to keep for booting from Knoppix Linux CD)
IDE-1 Master: 250GB WD Drive
IDE-1 Slave: 80GB IBM Drive

Unless i'm missing something, your syslog appears to be normal, so at this point i'm puzzled as to why the 250G drive is failing to initialize.

Is this a new drive? Can you format it using a different OS on the same machine?

When you format the drive, there will be a bunch of things scrolling by on the screen. It appears that partitioning does occur (syslog indicates that there is a partition on the drive), but the formatting is most likely failing. Can you make out an error message before the screen clears?

Another thing that you may want to try is the SMB version. It uses a generic IDE driver. Try that and see if it will format the drive.

The largest drive I have on hand is 160G, so at this point I have no way to verify proper handling of 250G. If someone else is spinning a 250G WD drive of the same specs in their NASLite, please post and let us know.

Hi Tony,
it is a new drive (WD, 40GB). And I have reformatted it again to under Knoppix Linux (an all day undertaking for a Linux novice like me...;-)) That did not make a difference to the issue.

Disks hooked up to the primary IDE work fine (no matter what the disk 40-80-250 GB, and no matter if one or two). But disks on the secondary IDE will not mount successfully. The BIOS nevertheless will display all disks correctly (as does the NASLite admin tool)

When I use option 4 and try to initialize the disks on 3 or 4, one message flashes up:
"umount: /export/Disk-3 : no such file or directory",
followed by the "Failed to configure Disk-3, only fixed disk etc" message.

I am stuck, but would really like to use NASLite. Any more ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Thorsten

There could be 2 possible issues here. One could be a bad NASLite image. I would re-download the image, re-master it on to a new floppy, and check again.

The other problem could be a flaky IDE port or cable. Switch the cables, and see if this works. Then try NASLite on another box w/ the same drives.

This should at least eliminate those possibilities.

Hope this helps,

Tim

Tim,
thanks for your input. I would rule out a flaky IDE Port/ Cables, since everything works fine under Knoppix.

Will try to use new disk then, and see if this helps.

Okay, now I tried it all:
An alternate Disk with SMBG did not work either.

The regular SMB version though made all 4 drives available! But of course showed a network error due to the presence of the Intel 1000 Pro.

Which lets me conclude that the "Non-generic" IDE Driver in SMBG is the culprit.
Possible to fix?
I'll be glad to help with any Syslogs

Regards, Thorsten

Tony,
Now with SMB (rather than SMBG) I am up and running - with my old, slow Network Card ;-).

One more lay question: I now have 4 hdd's installed.
Three are formatted as EXT2 (these are the ones I would like to primarily use in the NAS Box.)
Disk-2 is in EXT3, since I installed the Knoppix Linux on that one, and it does show up in my Windows network.

If I was to write/ read from this particular disk now, could NASLite (being designed for EXT2) ruin files in the process?
(Otherwise, if that is not the case, I might as well format all drives in EXT3 or reiserFS and then use them in NASLite, correct?)

Please advise.

Following I am posting the 'new' syslog (of SMB):

Would be great, if it's possible to fix the SMBG Version! :D

Thorsten,

EXT3 in an extention of EXT2. That's why your other versions see the drives. I beleive they should be able to read and write to them, but they wont have their journaling working. That may cause corruption when you switch back to EXT3, as it will be looking for a journal that's not there or not complete.

Under Knoppix, you should be able to format the drive to EXT2. I know that an EXT2 drive can be 'extended' to EXT3 w/o a reformat or loss of data, but I'm not sure the reverse is true.

Tim

Hi Thorsten,

Two things:

First, what you are trying to do with Knoppix and NASLite is probably not a good idea. I’d recommend against it and suggest that you pick an OS and stick with it. The problem is that sooner or later something will go wrong and you may loose a large amount of data based on the drive sizes you are using. From a server standpoint, that’s a no-no!

Second, regarding your IDE1 problem – there appears to be a number of issues involving some boards with PIIX4 and Linux, mostly DMA problems. I’m not sure that making changes to the G versions is a good idea unless this is a problem on other machines with the same chipset. Since you are the first to report the problem, I’d ask anyone else to please post if they experience the same or similar problem.

Otherwise, I’ll make a last attempt at getting G running as follows:
- Disable all HDs in the BIOS
- Disable Power Management
- Check your IRQ and DMA allocations and correct if necessary
- Disable any BIOS controlled devices (sound, mouse, etc.) that may be causing a conflict
- Try the COMPATIBILITY autoconfiguration option in the BIOS if available

Again, if someone else is having the same problem, please post and let us know that it isn’t isolated to Thorsten’s machine.

I have tried the SMBG,FTPG versions compared to the SMB,FTP versions in the same machine , same settings except for rtl8169(1000mb) vs rtl8139(100mb).

There is a difference ! In the regular with the 100mb card all disks are found & formated, data transfered successfully. In the 1000mb card, only 2 disks are found (on the 1st ide drive). Disk 3 & 4 -not available.

I switched back to the 100mb card , and voila the other 2 drives are found. with data on them.
So there seems to be a slight glitch in the G versions of NASlite kernel.
