Hi,

I recently decided to re-invent my NASLite server and install a hypervisor to allow for an all in one solution. Originally I started with ESXi, and created a NASLite Virtual Machine where I figured out hot to use Raw Device Mapping (RDM) and give the NASLite VM access to the hard drives from the old NASLite system that already had data on them. I switched from ESXi to Proxmox and figured out how to physically add hard drives to the NASLite VM that I created in Proxmox.

I have zero issues accessing the data or seeing the HDs on my network, or in FTP. The issue I am having is writing to the hard drives with my FTP program. NASLite is properly set up, unlocked, has a valid IP address, and Read and Write permissions were set on the hard drives from within NASLite on the VM. I am had this issue in ESXi and now in Proxmox as well.

Again, to repeat the issue, I am unable to add/write any data to NASLite via my FTP program. I have no problem logging in, reading directories, copying files from NASLite, but I can not upload any files to the HDs.

I created another VM, it runs Lubuntu 16, and I attached one of the NASLite hard drives to that VM. Lubuntu had zero issues reading and writing to that hard drive.

Would someone be able to suggest any insight in to why NASLite will not let me write to the hard drives when Lubuntu will :?: :?: :?: :?:

BTW, I only run one VM at a time at the moment until I can figure out how to fix the NASLite Write issue.

There's only 2 possible reasons for this;

1: The drives are exported as Read Only.

2 : The service is set to Read Only.

I would check from the services menu and make sure FTP is set to RW

Quote:
SERVICE CONFIGURATION MENU

Currently Active ( TELNET HTTP RSYNC FTP SMB/CIFS NFS AFP DAAP/MDNS UPNP )

1 - TELNET [ ON ] (ON, --)
2 - HTTP [ ON ] (ON, --)
3 - RSYNC [ RO ] (RW, RO, --)
4 - FTP [ RW ] (RW, RO, --)
5 - SMB/CIFS [ RW ] (RW, RO, --)
6 - NFS [ RW ] (RW, RO, --)
7 - AFP [ RW ] (RW, RO, --)
8 - DAAP [ -- ] (ON, --)
9 - UPNP [ -- ] (ON, --)
M - DAAP/UPNP OPTIONS
S - Status Update [ 01 ] (01, 05, 10, 15, 30, 45, 1h, 4h, 8h, --)

R - Return To Main Option Menu

Hi Ralph,

Thank you for the quick reply!

I double checked, and the FTP is already set to RW in the services configuration.

I should also mention that even with AFP I can not transfer anything to the server from OSX finder as well. It is the weirdest thing. I used the same command in Proxmox that I used for the NASLite VM to add the hard drive to the Lubuntu VM, and Lubuntu has zero issue uploading files to the hard drive.

I will investigate the read only issue. Perhaps I am experiencing this issue because I am trying to add files from outside of the Proxmox server from my laptop.

I have noticed one interesting thing as well while playing with this setup.

When I am in Lubuntu and run PCManFM I can download files to the Lubuntu desktop from the mapped hard disk. I am unable to upload/drag/copy anything back to the mapped hard disk.

I did find a fix for this, whereby I have to run PCManFM as root, and then there are no issues writing to the hard disk.

So, perhaps there is a permissions issue I am missing in the VM with NASLite whereby I am unable to write to the same hard disk because of Proxmox.

NASLite squashes all permissions down to NAS-USER, with full read/write access and only responds to those for the most part.
The admin user creates any system files/directories.

If you have existing files from another distro on your NL drive, you're probably going to have issues unless the file are full read/write.

Permissions are pretty much cut and dry with NL, I would check your setup that is using the NL drives.
