what are some of the options for backing a NAS box?

It mostly depends what you want to back up your NASLite box to. Personally I use mine as a backup device, transferring files to it using rsync (a command line utility which can be scripted). This could work the other way too, using rsync on another computer to transfer files from the NASlite.

This is Unix only, but I'm sure there must be some suitable backup utilities for Windows. I'm guessing the route to go would be to map your NASLite drives to drive letters, then transfer files from it with the suitable utility.

In the Windoze envirnment, you can you use any backup program you wish from the myriad products available. My favourite currently is SyncBackSE, which has some exceptional features, especially useful for a slow connection, such as the FastBackup option, which keeps a local cache of all files backed up. This way it doesn't need to re-read gigabytes of previously backed up files, to do an incremental backup - PROVIDED you do not mess with the backed up files

Two other favourites of mine are Genie Backup Manager pro and SecondCopy2000

I use SecondCopy2000.

The only problem I ran into was that SecondCopy2000 was stopping because of the lost+found directory created by NASLite+.

I removed the lost+found directory on the NASLite+ drive(s) and SecondCopy2000 works like a champ. The first one takes quite a while (depending on the size of your data), after that it just does an incremental backup.

Why not just exclude Lost+Found?

I also set the SAN disk to no indexing and no undelete trash can, but that's my choice. As primarily a backup, I do not need either functions. Ah, and exclude from antivirus scans too. All the files would have been scanned already.
