Santa brought me a Blackberry PlayBook for my Christmas. I've purchased KalemSoft Media Player from the App Store and, mostly, it's an excellent media player. It sees my NASLite-M2 NAS over the network and plays mp3 audio files flawlessly. However, the app freezes when I try to access FLAC files streamed from NASLite. It looks like it's unable to retrieve information about the files in preparation to play them. The same files play OK if they are stored directly on the PlayBook. To me, that suggests a problem in the KalemSoft Media Player app's compliance with UPnP.

I reported the problem to KalemSoft and they wanted to know the UPnP compliance profile that I was using. I've always had it set to GENERIC as that sems to suit streaming to my Western Digital TV Live media player. I tried changing the profile to DLNA but that has not helped with the FLAC files. They also speculated that NASLite tries to transcode the FLAC files to something other format, but I'm almost entirely certain that that's not the case. I've reported this back to KalemSoft and I'm waiting for their response.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks.

Thanks for the advice about the crackberry forums.

I now think that the problem has nothing at all to do with NL-M2 but lies entirely in KalemSoft Media Player. It looks like it works fine with flac files generated using Audacity, but not with the SourceForge flac encoder or with Sony Sound Forge. I'm chasing the matter up with KalemSoft.

Cheers.

NASLite-M2 does not transcode at all.

In an attempt to sort out this problem I've been looking at my NL-M2 server's UPnP output with UPnP-Inspector (http://coherence-project.org/wiki/UPnP-Inspector) and the URLs produced by NL-M2 look very different from "normal" UPnP URLs: see the screen shots on the UPnP-Inspector website.

I have also set up the rygel UPnP server (https://live.gnome.org/Rygel) on my Linux laptop and have inspected its output too.

On NL-M2, a typical URL is: http://192.168.1.250:49152/web/286.flac

Whereas, on rygel the exact same audio track produces a URL which looks like: http://192.168.1.75:39542/MediaExport/i ... mI%3D.flac

Notice too that they use different ports: 49152 for NL-M2 and 39542 for rygel. Perhaps Ralph could comment on this difference and why the NL-M2 URL looks "non-standard".

Thanks.

Some further digging using UPnP Inspector reveals that the UPnP streaming in NL-M2 is based on GeeXboX (http://ushare.geexbox.org/). With that in mind, I installed ushare onto my Linux laptop computer and found that the two flac-format audio files which would not play on my PlayBook when streamed from NL-M2 do play when streamed from ushare which is supposed to be the same code.

That suggests a problem with the implementation of the ushare code in NL-M2. Any additional thoughts from Ralph?

Thanks.

UpNp profiles were different.

NL has PS3, XBOX, DLNA and GENERIC.

I couldn't tell you off the top of my head if uShare defaults to generic or another.

Thanks for the response Ralph.

I have NL configured as DLNA. The default profile for uShare is not DLNA so I presume that its default is equivalent to NL GENERIC. I can play all flac format audio files streamed from uShare whether it is configured as "generic" or DLNA. That suggests to me that there is a difference between uShare and NL in the way in which they stream flac audio media. Selecting GENERIC or DLNA makes no difference in NL.

Is NL based on version 1.1a of uShare, or an earlier version. I see from the release notes (http://ushare.geexbox.org/#Latest_News) the comment "Much more complete DLNA support through external libdlna". Does NL implement everything that's in the libdlna support library? It's version 0.2.3-0 that's installed on my linux laptop to support uShare. I also notice (http://ushare.geexbox.org/#Usage) that while uShare has an XBOX profile, it does not have a profile corresponding to NL's PS3 and that the DLNA profile appears to be provided to support PlayStation3.

Could you please clarify how much NL's DLNA streaming deviates from uShare since it's clear that NL does not stream flac files as well as uShare?

Finally, it would be good if NL could implement the web interface into the DLNA streamer (i.e. http://ip_address:port/web/ushare.html) which works in uShare. I realise that this has been discussed some time ago in another thread, but I thought that I would ask too.

Many thanks.
