I have built three new servers, all running 2.67. Two are running an ASUS board with Intel procesors, the other is a BioStar with an AMD processor. All three have 3ware 9500S -12 port cards. The boards have 32-bit PCI slots, but I have used 3ware 8500 cards in similar motherboards without issue.

The problem is that it will literally 10 minutes for the system to boot. The boot process is normal until starting servers. Mounting Storage loads like normal, but then it takes the 9-11 minutes to show that servers have started and Setting Normal Admin mode.

Sometimes, about the third or fourth boot, it will start normally.

Booting from a USB drive on all three with the install from the same iso. I have even tried using another USB created from a different iso it will will also take about 10 minutes to boot.

I have tried using a 3Ware 8506 card in one and that didn't make a difference.

When the server finally is loaded, on a Mac using 10.5, some of the folders that contain data will not show any of the files in the folder. I am connecting with AFP.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. These are about the 10th NASLite server that I have built and have never had any issues like this.

Thanks

Do you have a screen attached to the servers ? If yes, what are you seeing on the last line on the screen ? Can it be that NL is checking some drives because the server was not closed down "normally" or the check every x mounts time has arrived ?

Yes, I have a screen attached. It shows all of the drives mounted.
Mounting Storage (Disk-0-1).....Done
After that appears, it will take 10 minutes before servers have started and Setting Normal Admin mode appears on the screen.
Thanks

Have you tried enabling SMB and seeing if the drives are visible faster that way. What about the browser access to the drives on the IP address of the NAS?

I have all the services loading.
The box is unreachable until the Setting Normal Admin appears (which is right after it shows all the services running).
You can't get to it using any service: smb, afp, http

Thanks for the suggestion.

Just created a ver 2.65 USB drive and copied the configurations to it from the running server.

Rebooted and the server boots normally from 2.65.

I will try that and see what happens.

Any other suggestions as to what is happening with 2.67 would be appreciated, though.

Hello Rick,

How much RAM in those machines?

The only difference between 2.67 and previous versions of the software, that could affect boot times, is the compression of some of the binaries in the root. On launch, those decompress in RAM prior to execution. I have a small server at home that runs NASLite-2 v2.67 and uses a 700MHz VIA CPU with 512M of RAM and 4 2TB drives attached to it. The boot delay is noticeably longer on such slow machine, but nothing to complain about. I think I'm up and running within a couple of minutes after a cold boot.

The 10min delay you are experiencing is puzzling. I'll probably approach it as follows:

  • With all cards connected, reset BIOS to defaults and save settings. This will allow the BIOS to reallocate IRQs in some cases.
  • Try disabling power management in the BIOS.
  • Disable USB2 support in the BIOS.

If the above don't improve your boot time, then gut the machine and start testing beginning with the USB boot device only and no other cards or drives. Add items one by one until you begin seeing the problem. That should at least point you in the right direction.

Also, posting a full syslog of the fully-populated machine 15 minutes after boot will be helpful.

Hope the above makes sense.

Tony.

Tony,
Thanks for the detailed response.

One of the three machines has 4 G of Ram, the other two have 8G.

I have already put two of the machines in production at another location so I am taking them back to 2.65 since I can't do the testing outlined. The users are have a lot of issues using AFP and Macs on 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6.
I have servers running 2.65 without issues, so I am going to try that to solve their issues of files now showing in the Finder and not appearing in open dialog boxes.

I will try the steps out outlined on the third box with 4G of RAM, and let you know what I find.

The puzzling part is that this is happening on all three machines. Two are identical in hardware specs while the third has a different motherboard, RAM and processor. The only common thing is the 3Ware card. But it will boot and run fine using 2.65.

Thanks,
Rick

Rick, Is this NL2 x64 or 32-bit?

The version of AFP is new in 2.67 and is updated to provide 3.3 support, so that may be the fix for the OSX issues, but the boot delay will be back. I understand it's inconvenient, but without a syslog or some experimentation, I'm totally in the dark as to what's causing this. You did mention earlier that you tried an 8506 and the delay was still there. I have an 8506 in my SQL server with two mirrored SATAs hanging off of it. I'll try tonight and see what I get.

If anyone else is seeing a boot delay of approximately 10 minutes while launching services, can you please chime in.

Thanks.

Tony.

Tony,

I am using the 32 bit version on all of them.

I am going to work on this over the weekend and will send a log when I get it.

I appreciate the help.

The 32-bit version should have absolutely no issues, since there are no CPUs compatible with a i486 or better that will refuse to run it. Right now, I'm banking on BIOS settings.

Thinking this through: During the process of launching services, each service is launched in sequence. After each service is started, the system waits a bit for the proper PIDs to show up before proceeding with the next service. So, let's say the delay is caused by one of the services taking a long time to start. That is a very strange thing indeed - I've never seen that happen.

Assuming the above to be the case, disable all services in the admin, save and restart. Does the problem go away? If so, then it is indeed one of the services that may be flaking. If so, start turning one service at a time and see which one brings the delay back. It can then be assumed that the problem is with that service. Turn all services on and disable only the one that caused the problem and test again. If the delay is gone, then we have a culprit.

Other than that Rick, I have nothing. :? I'll have to wait until you post a full syslog.

Tony

BTW, my SQL box booted NL2 just fine with no issues. The 3w card was detected and the array mounted. No issues to report.

Tony,

I just tried starting up using a totally different computer without a 3Ware card installed at all. It still took the long 10 minutes to boot without any drives attached.

I downloaded the 2.67 iso again, burned another CD, updated the USB drive and rebooted. The first time, it booted normally.
After a reboot, it took the 10 minutes to start all the services and get to the admin screen.

Below is the log file after waiting 10 minutes after it finally booted:

BWT, I have tried three different USB drives as well.

I am going to try the process of starting and stopping the services like you suggested. Since it booted normally once, it may take a while to verify that it a service is causing the issue.

Thanks for all your help.

I turned off all the services and rebooted normally.
Added Telnet and booted okay.
Added HTTP and took 10 minutes again.
Disabled HTTP and added FTP so it was only Telnet and FTP and normal boot.
Leaving the same configs...Telnet and FTP....rebooted and took 10 minutes again.

Went back to just Telnet. Boot once okay. Boot second time with Telnet only..10 min.
Third boot with just Telnet...10 minutes

What I have tried:
4 different computers
(Fourth computer has no drives attached)
Booting with and without 3Ware cards
Three different 3Ware cards 9500
Plus a fourth different model 8506
Four different USB drives
Two downloads of the iso (using same link)
Installing the software on the USBs multiple times
Disabling services

The only thing in common is the iso download.

All of the combinations boot okay with 2.65.

The log file times show a normal time for booting, but the server is unreachable until after the services start.

This is the log after returning to just Telnet and HTTP so I could get the log files.
It booted normally.
It seems that saving the configs is somehow related.
If I make a config change and save them, it will sometimes boot normally (not always).

Continued to work on this today...
Put the USB back into the original hardware where it had a valid unlock code.
Disabled all but Telnet and HTTP and it booted normally
Rebooted two more times to be sure it worked and all boots were normal
Added RSync...two reboots were okay
Added FTP...reboot okay
Added SMB... took the 10 minutes to boot
Stopped SMB and saved configs
Rebooted Got error message could not find kernel image
Shutdown completely and rebooted
Got error that is not a valid ELF file

If I weren't so stubborn and didn't already have 8 good NASLite servers up and running, I would have given up weeks ago.

For now, going back to 2.65 and will stay there until there is an update to 2.67 or there is a solution.
