Today, I restarted my Windoze machine, then went to open a textfile I have shortcutted to my desktop... and got an error from Windows saying something about not accessed in a timely basis. I went and opened Disk-1 from the desktop, and it loaded... but Windows then showed a green fuel-gauge sort of effect moving left to right across the directory-path field of the windows explorer window, as if it was taking awhile longer than normal to refresh its memory of what was on there. But I was then able to load that textfile like normal.

A few moments later, I heard a quick series of different-pitched tones coming, more than likely, from the NAS. After this, I went over to the NAS and looked, and saw that the disk activity light was going on and off in little bursts.

I went to the web-page on the NAS, checked the page for Disk-1, and saw this:

I have not made any changes to my NAS hardware in ages, and I haven't restarted it in awhile, either. What could this mean? Should I be worried?

Several comments and a few questions.

1. Upgrade to NL 2 (you posted in the NL1 section).
2. Temps are high 48/50. Get those drives down to 40 or lower.
3. What is doing the Extended Offline Tests so frequently ? Are you doing those manually ?
4. Make sure you have backups of important data.

Disk 2 read test has failed (a long time ago (almost 4k hours ago)). It appears Disk 1 is not the only one with a potential problem.

Restart NL and observe carefully on the console the progress of startup. It should be doing file system checks. If it does not, start the file check manually for each disk after NL boots.

Two questions:

Would offline tests be something Windows is doing, or is offline tests something that's done internally to the NAS? I ask because I had to set one of the folders on Disk-1 to Always available offline because that was the only way to get it accepted when I added that folder to the Windows Music library.

Are you telling me Disk-1, and to some extent Disk-2, are going bad? Do I need to transfer all that material onto new drives?

Windows could have been doing tests ... but I don't think it would be forcing the EXTENDED test so frequently. So that's a little odd; but I could be wrong, and windows performed those tests because of inconsistencies it encountered.

(Side comment: were these drives ever attached to a Windows PC ? Windows -- as a client to NAS -- can NOT perform these tests.)

From your experience you should have some idea whether these drives were ever used on windows PC. NASLite will not perform extended offline tests all by itself. Even manually invoking extended file system checks are NOT the same thing as what's being reported in the Test Section of the SMART information. So .. how long (# running hours) have these drives been attached to NASLite ?

The "available offline" (Windows client) feature and "offline test" (SMART firmware) are not related.

The "irq" errors may be caused by something other than a dying or flaky drive, but you will need to step thru a process of elimination to find the source of the problem. Start with drive cables.

If it was my data ... yes, I'd offload it now. New drives are cheap. Or at minimum I'd immediately follow all my recommendations in my prior post.

These drives have never been on a Windows PC. Well, one of them was a refurbished drive, but it was totally formatted by NASlite when I originally put it in several years ago. The NAS has been running in the form it is now unchanged for years and years. I have not opened the machine or anything since probably the middle of the 00s or so, probably not since I replaced that drive way back when. Actually, now that I think about it, I moved all the drives into a better machine some point after I replaced that drive (better processor, more ram)... but haven't really touched it much since, and that was years ago.

Would NAS2 have better repair functionality in it related to this issue? Say, where I could check everything I might need to know about an issue like may be going on here without having to plug a monitor and keyboard into the machine and watch what it says at startup?

Okay, what does it mean when... on VERY rare occasions, the NAS plays four higher-pitched beeps followed by four lower-pitched beeps? Or maybe it's 5 higher-pitched followed by 5 lower-pitched. In any event, it just suddenly, out of the blue, does this sound... and then I don't hear a peep out of it again like that, even once, for days and DAYS.

I see in the PDF manual that if the NAS detects an approaching failure of the hard drive, it will generate a 5-beep audible alarm every 5 minutes. Well, I'm not hearing anything of that sort. Not every five minutes, anyway.

So, why would it be be doing this? What does it mean?

That's a question developers Tony or Ralph need to answer. It's still possible there's some flaky hardware in your case. Sorry I had not further followed up. Curiously no one else wanted to chime in either, though.

1. Have you lowered the temperatures of the drives yet ?
2. Got backups ?
3. Try a Linux Live-CD to run the SMART tests manually ? ("smartctl")
4. Upgrade to NL-2 ?

Since this is apparently purely a NAS machine running NL1 for the past 10 or 20,000 hours I am still puzzled by what is doing the extended offline tests. I don't believe NL1 does those by itself. Have there been any additional ones past the latest ones you reported ?

The irq errors could go away if you go thru a process of elimination to find the cause (reseat cables, RAM, PCI card (if you use any), etc). Whether the irq errors cause the beeps, I don't know.

Well, today, I went to load a large textfile off Disk-2, and the end part of it was gone. I restarted the machine, figuring it was some sort of file table issue that might self-correct itself..... but now I see:

This was after the machine went for several hours on the restart.

I still see disk activity going on, tho. Lots of it. I quick google on "naslite filesystem is not mountable" took me to a thread here saying to either use one of the for-purchase versions of NASLite, or use a linux repair process from a live CD. I've done the latter before, ages ago (before I moved to a better machine with more ram in it).

I suppose I could restart the machine again and see if this time it restores things and mounts the drive... but I don't want to do that while there's disk activity. I don't know why there IS disk activity, since I'm not at the moment reading or writing to the disk from Windows. It might be trying to do it's offline-mode stuff, though, making a local copy of the stuff in my extensive Music folder on Disk-1, which last I checked (though, honestly, that was days ago) it hadn't fully completed that process. Maybe I should go uncheck Offline Mode on that folder... :-/

I've been reluctant to move the machine to where I can connect a monitor and keyboard to it, though... because I'd have to MOVE a buncha stuff out of the way in order to move the machine.

I HAD copied a WHOLE bunch of files over there to Disk-2 yesterday, a few gigs of smaller files (none of the individual files where near that large, but collectively they came to a couple of gigs) and it went by without issue... other than a few instances where Windoze complained that the filename was too long to fit into the destination directory.

neither drive is enormous 320 and 250 gig if google is correct - not read the whole thread so dont know if you have more drives in there - maybe not using the free version

but how much memory have you got in the machine - thats the first thing i would look at if a drive is not finishing the file check or hanging

put as much as you can in - it will do no harm and may well solve the problem

Okay, this is weird. It was making 3 higher pitched beeps, and then 4 lower pitched beeps, repeating in regular intervals. The PDF manual says a 5-beep warning every 5 minutes indicates an approaching failure, but it doesn't say what sort of beeps, and there's nothing in there to indicate what 3 beeps followed by 4 beeps means. This was with the disk activity light constantly on.

On the other hand, looking at all the web pages at my NAS (the About, System, Disk-1 through Disk-4, SYS Log, and so on), the data was clearly being truncated on all of them, so that only the very top of the text info was coming up, often cut off in mid-word. It wasn't like that a few days ago. oO

I finally resorted to restarting the machine, and.... this time it brought Disk-2 up fine, but didn't make Disk-1 available! Before, it was the reverse of that. I'm not getting the beep tones now, though.

addendum:

BTW, I'm getting a clicking sound from the machine. It was doing that before, today, too. Six slow clicks, a pause, six slow clicks, a pause.... I'm guessing that means I'm going to need to replace one of the drives, but which one? When I was trying to read Disk-1 from over the LAN lately, it was giving huge fits... showing as offline half the time, then coming accessible again a bit later, before going offline again, so I guess that means Disk-1 needs to be replaced.
