NASLite Network Attached Storage

I have 3 80 Gb hard drives attached to the motherboard. When I boot hda and hdb are recognized just fine but when I try to confiigure the drives on hdb... it says the drive does not exist... if I switch the cables it still only recognizes the drives on hda.....

Anyone know how I can fix this??

are you sure the second controller is not just broken.

If this were me i would boot with Knoppix and have a play there.

Knoppix has alot more tools at your disposal to test whats happening

I dont think its the controller because I have tried it on 2 different pcs. Both are Dell Gxi and have the most recent bios. Do you need to use newer drives for NAS to work?

Can you supply the model number and make of the Drive.

i have tested nas on some old drives smallest was 2 gb 2x 4gb and they worked correctly.

if the drive is old i'd suggest buying a new one. as these are cheap and you will have much more space.

if you run a winme startup disk does fdisk see all the drives? i assume the bios sees the drives, do you have the jumper setting as master on the disk?

not sure about this but maybe if the drive is set as a slave you are pressing the wrong button to configure the drive in naslite?

They are all 80 Gb Western Digital Drives... I will post the model #'s when I get home. The bios recognizes all of them. The disks jumpers settings are set to cable select... I am pressing the correct buttons

on the second ide channel make sure that the HD is on the last IDE connector, the one at the end.

IF they are all the same model then i see no reason as to why Naslite would have a problem as it all ready sees the HD on the primary channel.

have you tried putting the HD that does not show up on the primary ide channel.

here is how I would find out what going on.

First I'd have both HD's on the primary ide. i'd have one set as master and the other as slave, then on the third i'd also have this set as master.

then id boot the pc and check that the HD show up in post.

then id configure each drive 1 2 3.

if drive 3 still does not show id take it and replace with the master on ide 1 reboot and then see if i can configure it. if it still does not show then id admit defeat. and think the drive was faulty.

Cable Select. The drive is configured at the factory for a cable select setting. This allows the drive to assume the proper role of master or slave based on the connector used on the cable. For the cable select setting to work properly, the cables you are using must support the cable select feature. Current UltraATA cables with the 3 colored connectors do support this feature.

A feature of some PCs that allows IDE/ATA hard disks to be numerically identified by the order in which they are attached to the cable. Both the BIOS and the drive must support this feature. Without Cable Select, jumpers on the IDE drive must be set to Master or Slave designations


your problem could be the postition of where the HD is on the cable.
if the drive is a slave on the 2ide and you are pressing 3 to configure the drive then its the wrong one, you would have to press 4.

I assume that you are using a Gbit version. If so, then make sure that you are using the latest version. There was a problem with the autoconfigurator that has been corrected since.

Ive tried all of the things you guys have described and have resolved to the fact that its only going to allow me to have 2 hard drives configured on the first IDE. I even tried two completely different hard drives and cables on two different boxes.. both pc's are Dell Gxi 5166Ms. BTW.. I am using the regular SMB naslite diskette...

Well, 2 drives for NAS is better than none.

If anyone else has better luck with this particular pc please let me know....

I've had a 30GB and 200GB on te 1st IDE channel for over 3 months with no problems. I just bought 120GB and put it as master on the 2nd Channel. I get the same error that says the drive must be a fixed sidk and not CD-ROM ect...

It says it is installed and recognized, but I still get the error.

The jumper is set to master and the cable is correct.

I am using NASLite-SMBG ( v1.4 )

What can I do to resolve this?

What happens if you remove the two drives on the Primary IDe Channel and replace with the drive you are having problems with, Can you configure the drive?

No good. I put the drive as the master on IDE1. Same error message. The system see the drive, NASLite just won't configure it.

Does anything need to be done to the drive before hand? I didn't think I did anything special to the other 2 drives?

In the log TEKNOSYS shows, the key line giving a hint at the possible problem is:

/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0: unknown partition table

I believe that somehow a partition was created and NASLite does not recognize it, even though the "configure" should be able to wipe the hard disk.

Try software that came with the HDD to initialize it again (low-level format); no need to low-level format the entire disk, most vendors have a "quick format" choice. The important part is to get first few cylinders wiped out, destroying any partition table on the drive. There's also some free software out there that will do the trick (http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm). (You can abort after writing about 2-3% of the drive.)

Hi, Just wondering if there is resolution to this problem.

I am trying my hands on NASLite (non-G version) and running into exactly the same problem of cannot format / use disk(s) on the second IDE controller. Any pointer / help is appreciated.

Here is what I have tried and observed:

(a). two disks (120MB & 1.6G) with a P-100 board. The board has 2 IDE controllers. If both disks are connected to primary IDE controller, everything works. I have both disks formated while they are on the primary IDE controller.
(b). If either disk is connected to the second IDE controller, NASLite boot process recognizes it, but it does not get mounted at the end of the boot process and system says there is no disk if I try to format it again. I have tried both disks and master / slave permutations.
(c). I have tried to boot up the hardware with Damn Small Linux (2.4.31 kernel) with one disk each on primary and secondary controllers. I can use both disks and move files back and forth. This proves that both IDE controllers are working. Afterwards I move all disks to primary IDE and boot up NASLite, all files are on right disks and I can access all of them. However if I move either disk to secondary IDE, it is not accessible through NASLite anymore.
(d). This problem is observed in both -SMB and -NFX versions. I have not tested in -FTP version.
