With the new 2.6 release, I was hoping to make use of all 8 drives in my VIA NSD7800 machine. Per this link Here, its suppose to the be the Marvell MV88SE61XX Controller.

I've been looking everywhere in trying to locate a linux driver for it, but have yet to find something.

Apparently the NSD7800 has two different storage chipsets.

v2.60 supports numerous Marvel storage chipsets, a quick search and I'm not finding anything specific to that board. I'll have to do some more research.

Thanks.

Yeah, I've digging and searching as well, as freenas doens't support the driver either.

Here's two other things I found on trying to find a driver

http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/openb ... /31/373643

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ma ... ux_support

and a little more info if it helps anyone.

http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux ... /0207.html

and possible driver of some type here:

Are the 4 ports that aren't being seen ATA or SATA?

We should be supporting this, since it's a option in the kernel source :

Quote:
│ CONFIG_PATA_MARVELL: │
│ │
│ This option enables limited support for the Marvell 88SE61xx ATA │
│ controllers. If you wish to use only the SATA ports then select │
│ the AHCI driver alone. If you wish to the use the PATA port or │
│ both SATA and PATA include this driver. │
│ │
│ If unsure, say N. │
│ │
│ Symbol: PATA_MARVELL [=n] │
│ Prompt: Marvell PATA support via legacy mode │
│ Defined at drivers/ata/Kconfig:446 │
│ Depends on: ATA && ATA_SFF && PCI │
│ Location: │
│ -> Device Drivers │
│ -> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers (ATA [=m]) │
│ -> ATA SFF support (ATA_SFF [=y])

There SATA ports. The machine I'm using has a total of 8 hot-swappable sata drives that can be used. And thanks for taking time to help and maybe get the driver included. It would be great to make use of all 8 drives.

I don't see why you need something like this when they have like 1 TB hard drives now for less then $100. If looking to save power they have WD green hard drives. Little Atom Mini-ITX board about $100 with 2GB ram. That is a 2 cord 1.6 MHz CPU with Gigabit LAN. Then just power supply and case. Has 2 SATA ports on it.

I guess if you need 8 drives and hot swop then the system you talk about her would be good. But can get two 2 TB hard drives today. If that is old 8 hard drives seems like a wast.

I don't know that NASLite will find drives(s) that are changed out when the server is running....

Your correct in that I currently do not need 8 drives. But in planning for the future, as my media grows, and files become larger, than yes I would expect to make use of all 8 drives. I feel its best to ensure all 8 bays/drive work before starting to add media, and then run into issues later down the road.

Your correct, it doesn't. But the how-swapping of the drives makes it very easy replace and swap drives without having to open up the case. Just shutdown, swap a drive, and reboot the machine.

I'm currently in the office, and can do that when I get back home tonight. As I'm new to Naslite in general, is the log something simple to locate? I'll read through the manual as well to make sure I give you the right information.

Go to the status screens and click the syslog icon on the left. Copy the content and paste it in a post.

This is where your 4 working drives are identified, so that's scsi0-scsi3.

Here we find and try to configure the Marvell chipset and we appear to do so successfully as scsi4 and scsi5. Why PATA? Is the BIOS set to legacy (IDE) for those? What do you have connected to it and how?

Here is where we have a problem. I guess it's a cable/connector issue, drive jumpers not set properly, etc.

I don't have first-hand experience with that hardware but my guess is that you have a hardware/BIOS configuration issue and not a driver support issue.

I had already looked at the Bios, in trying to find a legacy mode, and do not see that option listed anywhere. The machine's swappable drive bays are all connected to SATA connectors. The machine is so compacted, there's no room in it put a single ATA cable inside. Also, if it helps, here's a link the machine's manual, which shows some of the Bios settings, but not much.

http://www.via.com.tw/en/downloads/manu ... 00_100.pdf

Also, since it looks like its trying to configure the Marvel chipset, should it have listed all 4 drive bays? scsi4, scsi5, scsi6, and scsi7?

Again, all drive bays are connected to Sata connectors to the board. Its so compacted I'll have to carefully try and review the cables. But for my testing, I've been using the same drive (a brand new smaller WD 60gig drive) that I have been moving from bay to bay to test with. I can put the drive into any of the top 4 bays and its recognized, which leads me to believe its not a drive jumper issue. Yet the the bottom 4 controlled by the Marvel chip are not being recognized.

I'm wondering if I need/should try to update the bios.
